About the Item

Gorgeous acrylic and pencil abstracted self portrait by California artist Erika Whiteway (American, b. 1954). Signed and dated lower right "Whiteway, 5/90". Unframed. Size: 22"H x 28"W. Erika Whiteway (b. February 26, 1954, San Jose, California) is a California writer, artist, musician, and thoroughbred breeder/trainer. She lived slightly off the grid and off the computer entirely for nearly ten years, until returning to the Bay Area, where she once more resides, making art, writing, playing music and taking care of horses. She was an early member of The Well, dubbed by "Wired Magazine as "the world's most influential online community", where she met Tiffany Lee Brown, Jon Lebkowsky, Paco Xander Nathan and Monte McCarter, founders of Fringeware Review. She soon became a contributing editor; she co-edited issue #4, "Chicks In Psyberspace", and issue #8, "Fringe Lifestyles" with Tiffany Lee Brown. She left high-school in 1971 and soon went to work at Golden Gate Fields racetrack. She was a groom for Jerry Dutton where she prepped Silky Sullivan for a 1973 St. Patrick's Day appearance with Kjell Qvale. Throughout the 1970's, she worked as a groom, freelance pony-girl and exercise rider at California tracks and ranches, where she also worked with cattle and sheep. She also has worked as a state livestock brand inspector, a mechanic, a veterinary technician, an adolescent crisis counselor and publicist for Mark Pesce, creator of VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). Her writing first appeared in "Wave Sector", a publication of San Francisco State's radio station, KUSF, under the pseudonym "Flippo Demimonde". She then became contributing editor of Thasher Magazine, writing music reviews, designing games and illustrating her own fiction. As entertainment columnist for the (West) Contra Costa Times, under the pseudonym "Dr. E.", she wrote about new music coming from bands like Negativland and Flipper. She has written for National Lampoon, World of Art, Mondo 2000, Santa Cruz Goodtimes, Bust, Unshaved Truths and many others. In the 1980's, she had an all-girl rockabilly band, "The Stir-Ups". Known as "Ricki Memphis", she played bass, wrote songs and managed the band with keyboardist Big Lou. KUSF DJ, Big Rick Stewart, interviewed the band on-air. After garnering the attention of local "415 Records", "The Stir-Ups" played at the 1984 Democratic National Convention along with Jefferson Starship, Tower of Power, among others. Shortly thereafter, the band broke up over an intellectual property theft incident with producer Dan Levitan. "The Stir-Ups" performed in the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Cruz and Los Angeles with , X, Silvertone (), The Red Hot Chili Peppers and a host of other bands. In the early 1990's

Artist Comments
A face surfaces within the abstract expression of artist Sharon Sieben's striking contemporary portrait. Cold wax mixed with oil constitutes a compelling image of her model in a meditative state. Sharon reminds us that sometimes, especially after a busy day, a quiet moment is most welcomed. "The subject in this portrait would agree," says Sharon.

About the Artist
Sharon Sieben prefers working in a loose, fluid technique and finds inspiration in the most unexpected things. Her parents bought her a set of oil paints when she was ten years old and it sparked her love of art. She especially admires the work of Impressionist artists such as Paul Cezanne because of how they broke tradition. When she's not making art, she enjoys reading and playing classical guitar...

Self Portrait #1, colorful gestural abstracted portrait
By Tom Bennett
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Oil on paper About Tom Bennett: With quick brushstrokes, Tom Bennett creates representational images of human figures and animals, emphasizing movement in a manner reminiscent of Lucien Freud, Edgar Degas and the photographer Eadweard Muybridge. Elongated and blurry, the horse racing up a hill (Canter Fritz, 2002) and the sinister cat landing a leap (Chien Blanc, 1998) elicit a sense of foreboding enhanced by Bennett’s somber palette; his female figures too reflect a grim sense of humor with their distorted nude bodies. The face of Untitled Figure (1997), for example, is obscured by layers of dark paint. Classically trained as a painter, he initially worked in oil on canvas but discovered that monotype printing enabled him to “literally push the image around,” creating an essential element of motion. To overcome the limited scale of monotypes, however, he switched to painting on slick-surfaced plastic. Tom Bennett’s practice is rooted in the classical tradition where painting and drawing from life is highly regarded. Bennett’s work is heavily influenced by Francis Bacon, Frank Auberbauch and foremost his father, Harry Bennett, who was also an artist. Tom’s time living abroad in Spain and traveling through Eastern Europe and Africa provided the artistic freedom to explore many of the techniques and subject matter that continue to define his practice. Bennett was born and raised in Connecticut. His mediums include monotypes, oil on paper, canvas or styrene board. In a technique that Tom started over 4 years ago, several of his monotypes have been painted over with oil paint using a palette knife, brush, or his fingers to re-purpose the underlying image. These works are a testament to Bennett’s ability to quickly and concisely compose an image with expressive brush strokes, foreshortened figures and expertly rendered light. Tom’s work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions worldwide. Bennett lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He is currently represented by Tabla Rasa...
