About the Item

Antique Italian painting signed Ernesto Fontana, dated 1893 and titled Tra i Due Litiganti Il Terzo Gode 1893, oil on canvas work depicting three children playing happily rolling among pink flowers, signed at upper right by Milanese artist E.Fontana, Milan 1837 - Cureglia, Switzerland 1918, while on the lower left edge it is again signed, dated and dedicated to his friend Prof. Lorenzani. This work of the Lombard school is in excellent state of preservation within a carved wood frame gilded in fine gold. On the lower edge of the frame is a brass plate engraved with the author's name and the title of the work. The canvas alone measures 30 x 24 cm and comes from a private collection in Milan. The back of the frame bears an inscription with title, author and dedication to the friend. To export an antique art object from Italy, an export license called BELLE ARTI must be applied for from the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage. the issuance of such a government license takes a couple of weeks or so, to be added to the order's shipping time. Ernesto Fontana (1837- 1918) Educated at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, Fontana followed the courses of Giuseppe Sogni, Francesco Hayez and Giuseppe Bertini, along with such protagonists of Lombard painting in the second half of the 19th century as Tranquillo Cremona, Daniele Ranzoni, Filippo Carcano and Mosè Bianchi, with whom he also shared a studio. He initially moved toward the themes of historical romanticism. He began his career by painting historical paintings: The meeting between Elizabeth and Mary Stuart was awarded a gold medal at the National Painting Exhibition in Milan and later purchased by the British Museum in London. Among other things, he won a gold medal at the Ferrara Exposition in 1875. Fontana, however, was most at home in genre painting, close in taste, and also related in friendship, to the Induno brothers, the true initiators of anecdotal painting. He also devoted himself to the fresco decoration of Lombard patrician churches and palaces. Particularly noteworthy are a theory of nudes that decorated the bathroom of a rich and well-known Milanese man (Marangoni, 1924) and, above all, the frescoes in some of the rooms of Villa Olmo in Como, owned by the Visconti di Modrone dukes. Fontana then takes from the Scapigliatura the sentimentalist attitudes that he translates into the subjects of his paintings in a light tone that is easy to popularize: endowed with a certain technical skill, he also devoted himself to painting graceful and mischievous female figures.

Bruce Adams is best known as a conceptually based figurative painter who references various (often historical) painting styles. In exploring the act of painting, Adams peels back the layers of meaning inherent in making and viewing art. Artist Statement: Though we don’t generally think about it, thirteenth-century religious art actually reflects medieval European perceptions of events that occurred in the ancient Middle East. In the Divine Beauty project I filter sacred iconography through the secular lens of today’s societal perceptions by placing found commercial fashion imagery (from magazines and other sources) in the context of painted religious narratives, producing a clash of ideas that throw both sources into question. Like many Western New Yorkers, I was raised Catholic. I attended a Catholic elementary school, went to church every day. While the indoctrination didn’t last beyond childhood, it did instill a lifelong affinity for the visual traditions of sacred art. But, as the recent economic meltdown has made apparent, conspicuous global consumption has replaced western religion today as the favored path to personal fulfillment. Fashion models serve as the new icons...
