About the Item

This atmospheric late 19th-century oil painting by Swedish artist Ernst Philip De Fine Licht (1855-1929) offers a quietly poetic glimpse of Helsingborg as it once was. Though a grocer by trade, De Fine Licht possessed a keen eye for the rhythms of everyday life, and here he lingers on a moment outside the old town hall - an unassuming civic building perched above the Øresund strait. The scene feels almost cinematic: three figures pause in conversation while a police officer, half-in shadow, watches from the doorway. It is the end of the working day, the clock reading just after five, and the town exhales into its evening. Boats slip along the strait, façades fall into long northern light, and far across the water the profile of Kronborg Castle - Shakespeare’s Elsinore - anchors the horizon. De Fine Licht’s manner has a gentle, Lowry-esque candour: simple forms, honest gestures, an affection for the unspectacular. His Helsingborg is not grand but lived-in, shaped by the people who passed this spot daily. The old town hall itself, built in 1800, would soon be replaced as the city grew, giving this painting the feeling of a farewell - an artist recording something familiar before it slipped into history. He painted this view more than once, suggesting a personal connection to the place. Unsigned and presented in a contemporary frame. Provenance: Private collection, Sweden.

Mid-18thC English School Marine Oil Painting With Two British Men-o’-War Ships
Located in Cheltenham, GB
US buyers pay no import tariffs on this item. This splendid mid-18th-century oil painting depicts a marine scene with numerous British and Dutch vessels, including two impressive ‘Men-O’-War’. It’s comparable to the oeuvre of Anglo-French painter, Dominic Serres RA (c.1722-1793). The rich British tradition of marine painting is representative of Britain’s naval power during the 18th century. Such was the dominance of Britain’s navy that paintings such as this were in high demand by patrons, particularly by the landed gentry. These drama-filled ensembles were influenced by the earlier Dutch painters such as Ludolf Backhuysen...
