This work of art depicts an urban landscape at the edge of a natural area. Dominated by shades of green and gray, the scene reveals a striking contrast between the tranquility of a verdant meadow and the urban background. A large tree with dense foliage subtly frames the picture, adding a natural perspective. Buildings with red roofs and white facades appear under a cloudy sky, suggesting an atmosphere of calm before the storm. Eugène Martin was born in 1880 to a bank employee and director of a haute couture house. Between 1898 and 1904, he was a stockbroker, then between 1906 and 1945 a clerk and later a director in a fashion house. Martin was close to Maurice Barraud and Alexandre Blanchet. From 1933 to 1944, he was president of the Geneva section of the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects; from 1944 to 1952, he was its central president. Martin was also a member of the artist group “Le Falot”.
