About

Oil painting on canvas, depicting The Three Graces, circle of Eustache Le Sueur (Paris, 1616 - Paris, 1655). The work depicts The Three Graces, or also called Aglaia, Euphrosyne and Talia, Goddesses of Joy, Charm and Beauty, who used to preside over banquets and other social events, spreading serenity, joy and friendship between gods and mortals. In our beautiful canvas, the female figure at the center of the composition is depicted with a fruit basket in hand and the gaze directed towards the observer, while in the background, the offer of one of the young women, a bunch of grapes, with a strong erotic charge, should depict the allegory of Autumn. Grapes symbolize the period of rebirth, because during this season the harvests represent a real preparation for winter. The French baroque painter Eustache Le Sueur, also written Lesueur, was born in Paris in 1617. The son of a sculptor carpenter, at the age of sixteen he was introduced to the studio of the painter Simon Vouet, who in 1642 entrusted him with the commission of eight compositions, taken from the Hypnerotomachia Polophili, for the Gobelins. At a young age he joined the Guild of Master Painters. Known for his religious images in the classical French baroque style, Le Sueur is one of the founders and first professors of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. The first successes are achieved thanks to some paintings for tapestries, but its fame is reinforced by a series of decorations for the Lambert palace that leaves unfinished. He painted many paintings for churches and convents, among the most important "The sermon of Saint Paul at Ephesus" and his famous series of 22 paintings of the Life of Saint Bruno, executed in the cloister of the Carthusians. Stylistically dominated by the art of Nicolas Poussin, Raphael and Vouet, the works of Le Sueur show an elegant structure in design and a contained composition. Eustache Le Sueur is considered the "French Raffaello”. The painter is often described as a poor and persecuted artist, a sort of Parisian Fra Angelico, so much so that he is accused of an exaggerated academic sentimentalism. Many of his works have disappeared or been poorly preserved. The painting is in good condition, with some restorations scattered. Carved and gilded wooden frame of the XX century. Dimensions : 88 x 64 cm unframed 108 x 83 con framed
