The Pygmy War
Oil on canvas, 45.5 x 61 cm
Framed, 64 x 78 cm
This peculiar and extravagant depiction of a war between pygmies, to the artistic work of Brescian painter Faustino Bocchi (1659-1741). This artist's Lombard extraction only partially explains his choice to depict these kinds of works, which fit precisely into that vein of bizarre and imaginative experimentalism of which Bocchi, his pupil Albrici, and, taking a leap backwards, Arcimboldo are certainly part. The other major influence that can be grasped is that coming from the Flemish artists active in Italy during the seventeenth century, some of whom would specialize in the depiction of so-called bambocciate, that is, works that aimed to depict popular scenes of everyday life, set in taverns, country festivals or city markets. Unlike the adherents of the school founded by Pieter van Laer, however, Bocchi had no realistic aim and decided to fill his works with these tiny figures, definable as dwarves or precisely pygmies, intent on fighting, celebrating or brawling in the most imaginative and unthinkable ways, thus giving the scenes a humorous and burlesque tone. The war motif, on the other hand, comes from a fellow countryman of Bocchi's, namely Francesco Monti, known as Brescianino delle Battaglie (1646-1703), who specialized in battle scenes precisely but was also related to the bambocciate genre. Further connections with Flanders are instead through Angiolo Everardi, a direct pupil of Monti and from a Flemish family, thanks to whom Bocchi approached the genres of still life and especially genre scenes. The minuteness, details, and grotesque scenes became trademarks of Bocchi, who has been approached by many critics in terms of his imaginative nature, meticulousness in small details, and bizarreness to Hyeronimus Bosch. Although there is no direct contact with the works of the Flemish master, who moreover lived more than a century before Bocchi, scholars have identified a common background in the interpretation of human vices through comic and extravagant creatures; if in Bosh this message appears evident in the Brescian painter it should be sought with a deeper reading, since the scenes seem to be closer to a fable-like and burlesque taste rather than a moralistic and religious one, finding tangents with the tales of Italian comic poetry. The style is immediately recognizable, as is the subject, of which there is an original by Bocchi, now in a private collection, which traces the same composition with the lizard, scissors, banquet, and background with the river and tower. Although the colors here are less blurred and lighter and the contour lines are more pronounced and obvious, the characters and the entire composition are executed with slavish fidelity.

Dancing putti
Oil on canvas, 122.5 x 131 cm
The canvas presented here, referable to the 19th century, constituted an exquisite example of a painting made to decorate a boiserie, as evidenced by the particularity of the format and the ornamental subject matter.
The theme of dancing putti takes up a widely used and experimented model around the 1620s, on which the greatest artists tried their hand: pordenone, author of the Dance of Putti now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, for example, was able to make use of multiple visual models to fine-tune this complex and original composition, such as having known Marcantonio Raimondi's famous engraving with a gyre of cupids, derived from an invention of Raphael himself and dated between 1517 and 1520. Over the following centuries, the fame of this prissy subject was never diminished.
In fact, the work under consideration can be attributed to the hand of 18th-century artist Angelo Monticelli, who specialized in tempera drawing and was a pupil of painter Andrea Appiani (1754-1817), active mainly in Lombardy, where, for the Teatro alla Scala he designed the figures of the box parapets (1807) and the curtain (1821). In 1826, during the repainting of Ferrara's Municipal Theater, Monticelli decorated the plafond with an Apotheosis of Lodovico Ariosto. The curtain of the Rossini Theater in Pesaro is also by his hand. For the Duke of Lodi Francesco Melzi...
