About the Item
Mariposa is an oil painting on oval masonite with an image size of 28 x 42" (oval), signend 'felix mas' lower left, unframed.
Felix Mas is in many ways an alchemist, transforming each canvas into treasure. These once void foundations are developed into dreamlike visions – some elements recognizable to us as grounded in reality but blended with areas of surreal fantasy. It is the gentle genius of Felix Mas that lays claim to these lyrical beauties.
Felix Mas was born in Barcelona and following extensive travels throughout Europe he returned to his native city, where he continues to work and reside. Mas’s studio is lively with classical music, friends, and family always about, offsetting the silence, allowing him to work for hours at a time; days passing without notice. He is an enchanting man, one of slight but refined frame who emanates pure joy. If you are fortunate enough to meet him in person, just a few moments of interaction will give you insight into his jubilant soul. He is not confined by the issues of modern life, instead he approaches his life with vigor and a gratitude for the good fortunes he has received – his creative impulse, his health, and his family. A man with such infinite spirit is the only one capable of producing works of this virtue.
Mas casts a tender gaze upon the female that is at times transcendental, their forms become akin to those of Goddesses, because he simply sees them as such. Every painting is extraordinarily sensual - the models confidently permissive, the artist a devoted voyeur. Recurring symbols and themes in his artwork center around Egyptian art forms, Asian cultural elements and a treasure chest of items which seem to catalog the history of human adornment – feathers, jewels, shells, fans, floral and plant motifs, fantastic coifs, luxurious fabrics, and the alchemical effect of light as it interacts with each of these. One of his favorite places is the sea and he fondly evokes this in his paintings by incorporating shells, seahorses, waves, and fan shapes. Some of his most dramatic examples portray women directly as enchanting and luscious sirens, glittering with the pearlescent light of the sea and with their hair swirling in the ocean’s current.
Mas is a traditional painter whose fascination lies with the expressive potential of the human body. He uses the highest quality products and often has the urge to create his own colors, mixing the pigments in a mortar himself. His studio is his world… a world in which he is continually surrounded and inspired by art, architecture, and most importantly, music. He has said, “Every day for me is Sunday. I am happy with life. I love good things, the classics and spending time with my children and family.”

Felix Mas
Spanish artist Felix Mas has a rare gift for capturing his vision of female beauty, a style many have referred to as ‘sensual elegance.” His women are luminous and fresh, his perspective a celebration of female beauty in its many cultures and idealizations. A fine balance and preoccupation with line, form and the achievement of fine color harmonies leads us through symbolism and fantasy into the realm of beauty in the female figure. It is a talent that makes his paintings appealing to even those who do not usually take to this style. Born in Barcelona in 1935, his interest in art began as a child and he attended the San Jorge Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona as young man. His first solo exhibition was held at the Galeria Jaimes in Barcelona and others soon followed throughout Europe and later North America. Travel is an obvious inspiration and influence on Mas’ work and his depictions of women. He is clearly influenced by Asian culture including a deep respect for Japanese woodblock prints, as well as the fashions of India, and the historical grace of Egypt, Rome and Greece. Each woman in his paintings is exquisitely dressed in rich fabrics that are elegantly draped and invariably placed in rich opulent settings surrounded by ornamentation and glossy accessories. Mas is a traditional painter and never one to shy away from hard work, including the fact that he creates his own pigments. His dedication to the perfection of each work is what makes what may seem like a repetitive theme so mesmerizing.
