About the Item

Ferdinand du Puigaudeau, the Ecole de Pont Aven painter, was descended from an ancient Breton family in France. The region, and more specifically the Breton villages of Pont-Aven and its neighbor Concarneau, were highly desirable locales for tourists and artists alike by 1860. A number of small inns offered housing to the dozens of artists, creating a network of support that ultimately became one of the most prolific and important artist’s colonies in the history of modern art. The arrival of the Impressionist painters in the 1880s marked the largest influx of serious artistic innovators. Although Puigaudeau’s family’s wealth enabled him to travel extensively throughout Italy, visiting Rome, Venice and Florence where he developed an interest in art, he was primarily a self-taught artist until his return to this particular region of France. He arrived in Pont-Aven in 1886 and took up residence in Madame Gloanac’s inn. Here at Pont-Aven, he began instruction with Paul Gauguin and met Emile Bernard. A true camaraderie of artistic progress was forged at this unique haven for painters. They regularly met and discussed developing theories and stylistic techniques and bloomed in the praise of their colleagues. Although Gauguin encouraged Puigaudeau and certainly shaped his style to an extent, his other Impressionist friends Renoir, Monet and Degas had as much influence upon him. Art historian Gerald Schurr notes that specifically in his light and rapid touch, and in his fluid treatment of light, the influence of Camille Pissarro was paramount. Puigaudeau studied the Divisionist theories of Signac and Seurat; the staccato like brushstrokes in many of canvases attest to this experimentation. With this extensive exposure, Puigaudeau developed a keen interest in the effects of light and began concentrating on scenes in which it was particularly captivating - night scenes, fireworks, glowing parades, evening carnival imagery, as well as sunrise, sunset and moonlit coastal views. The subjects he chose, compositions full of village gaiety and exuberance, reflect the joyous Breton lifestyle and beautiful landscapes that the Post-Impressionists found so captivating. This particular piece features both of these very distinct characteristics that he was known for. The contrast between the shadows and the light source can be scene playing across both the faces and hands of the girls, as well as within the soap bubbles themselves. Anyone who has the pleasure of seeing it up close will also notice the line variation within the vibrant colors.

Canvas support is original and attached to the original 4-member stretcher. Canvas has not been lined; is in very good condition. The painting was cleaned and a new varnish was applied in August 2018. Inpainting is small, scattered, and peripheral.
