About the Item

Fernando Botero 1932-2023 Colombian Juan Rodriguez Conejo Signed "Botero 88" (upper right) Oil on canvas Exemplifying Fernando Botero's distinctive visual language and mastery of form, Juan Rodriguez Conejo captures the Colombian master's enduring fascination with bullfighting in this intimate and delightful composition. This work belongs to Botero's most celebrated and coveted bullfighting series, created at the height of his international acclaim when his volumetric style had achieved worldwide recognition. The painting presents a compelling study of character and tradition, rendered with the technical virtuosity that established Botero as one of Latin America's most internationally acclaimed artists. Botero transforms the traditional matador portrait through his signature approach to proportion and form, presenting Juan Rodriguez Conejo in his elaborate golden traje de luces against a rich landscape backdrop. The figure's robust presence fills the canvas, his voluminous form rendered with meticulous attention to surface textures and decorative details. Golden embroidery catches the light across the bullfighter's ceremonial costume, while his direct gaze creates an immediate connection with the viewer. The artist's masterful handling of flesh tones and fabric demonstrates his classical training, while the exaggerated proportions reveal his revolutionary approach to figuration. Behind the matador, an orange tree heavy with fruit, one of Botero's most beloved symbols, serves as a nod to Colombia's lush landscape. Botero's artistic development reflects his unique position bridging Latin American and European traditions. Initially trained as a bullfighter before discovering his artistic calling, he brought intimate knowledge of this world to his canvases throughout his career. His classical education under Roberto Longhi, the distinguished Italian Renaissance scholar, combined with exposure to Mexican muralism during his formative years in Mexico City, created a distinctive synthesis of influences. This fusion of Western academic tradition with Latin American sensibilities positioned Botero as a singular voice in contemporary art, achieving unprecedented international recognition for a Latin American artist of his generation. His works entered the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, while an entire museum in Bogotá celebrates his contributions to contemporary art. This portrait appears in the definitive catalogue raisonné by E.J. Sullivan and J.M. Tasset and has received extensive scholarly attention in four major monographs dedicated to Botero's bullfighting works. The composition was featured in a significant international touring exhibition that traveled across three continents, including prestigious venues in Venezuela, Mexico, Spain and France, culminating in the celebrated 1992 exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris. Portrait of Napoléon II
Located in New Orleans, LA
The son of the legendary Napoléon Bonaparte, Napoléon François Charles Joseph, takes a spirited stance in this remarkable oil painting attributed to the Austrian portraitist Johann Peter Krafft. Believed to have been exhibited at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 in Paris, this work stands as a testament to both Austrian artistry and the legacy of one of the most powerful men in history. After Napoléon's exile to the island of Elba in 1814, his son was seen by many of his supporters as the last hope of France. The child was named the ruler of half of Europe, holding the titles of Napoléon II...

Buste d'homme barbu by Pablo Picasso
By Pablo Picasso
Located in New Orleans, LA
Pablo Picasso 1881-1973 Spanish Buste d'homme barbu (Bust of a Bearded Man) Signed "Picasso" (upper right) and dated "8.4.65" (en verso) Oil on canvas Pablo Picasso and his work transcend art history: they have achieved global celebrity within both academic circles and popular culture. More than any other artist, his ever-evolving, evocative style has come to define modern art of the 20th century, and to this day he continues to gain recognition. The most compelling of his works offer a glimpse into the psyche of the master himself, and the present work can be counted among these. Combining saturated color with a jarring simplicity, Buste d'homme barbu represents an important series of bearded men portraits that the artist composed during the last few years of his life. These works are among the most highly personal and intimate of his career, and they serve as remarkable examples of his mature style with their highly modern expressivity. Many of Picasso's works from his last years capture the visage of his wife Jacqueline, who was his chief model during this period. In April, however, at his home studio in Mougins, France, Picasso changed direction and produced a series of individual portraits of men. His male subjects derive from various sources. Often they were self-referential portraits; often they referenced his father, Spanish painter José Ruiz...

Untitled
By Fernando Botero
Located in PARIS, FR
Fernando Botero (Colombian, b.1932) is celebrated for his painted and sculpted scenes featuring animals and figures with inflated proportions, reflecting the artist’s predilection for satire, caricature, and political commentary. Born in Medellin, Colombia, Botero began exhibiting his paintings there in 1948, and later worked as a set designer in Bogotá. In the 1950s, he traveled to several different European countries, including Spain, Italy, and France, to study the work of Renaissance and Baroque masters. He also traveled to Mexico to familiarize himself with the current Mexican avant-‐garde. Botero became renowned for the varied source material he drew upon, from Colombian folk imagery to canonical works by Diego Velázquez, Pablo Picasso, and Francisco de Goya. In his depictions of contemporary Latin American life, he portrays the poverty and violence prevalent in Colombia in somber images, as well as in his iconic inflated figures, satiric images of Latin American presidents, first ladies, and government officials. A meeting with Dorothy Miller from The Museum of Modern Art in the early 1960s proved to be a turning point in his career; she acquired his work at a time when abstraction was the celebrated idiom, and he later exhibited his work in a major exhibition at the museum, solidifying his international reputation. In the 1970s, Botero moved to Paris, where he created large figural sculptures with his signature inflated forms. He remains engaged with images of his Latin American home city, and with overtly political imagery; his recent works include large paintings of prisoners at Abu Ghraib in a direct commentary on the war in Iraq. Botero has exhibited his work at the Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen, the Maillol Museum in Paris, the Palazzo Benezia in Rome, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and the National Museum in Bogotá. He currently lives and works in Paris, Montecarlo, and New York. 2012–2013 Museo Bellas Artes de Bilbao, Bilbao, Spain 2012 Una celebración, Palacio Bellas Artes de México, Mexico 2012 Hommage zum 80.
