About the Item

The painting depicts "Ossian tells Malvina about the exploits of his son Oscar" and is dated at lower right "Filippo Bellati did the year 1811" and the unframed measurements are 233 x 210 cm. The discovery of this large-format painting is an important addition to the catalog of a painter of some interest to the cultural milanese neoclassical figurative art, with particular reference to the years of the napoleonic rule. As soon as it was completed, the canvas was displayed at the annual exhibition of fine arts that opened in the halls of the Brera Palace in July 1811. Promptly the Milanese periodical "Il poligrafo" gave a detailed description of it [...] The subject of the painting is taken from the then very popular Songs of Ossian, published by Scottish writer James Macpherson beginning in 1760. As is well known, Macpherson published the first volume of this work as a anonymous in 1760, collecting and translating with much imagination, counterfeiting and often inventing them out of whole cloth, ancient Gaelic songs of epic character by attributing them to Ossian, a legendary bard in the tradition scotsman who lived, according to legend, in the third century A.D. and was believed a kind of Homer of Nordic culture. Macpherson then created a true and proper literary forgery. The success of the Songs of Ossian, however, was enormous and the author was induced to publish more volumes. The final version, after several partial releases in which new songs were always added, was published in 1773 and consisted of twenty-two poems, many of which were untranslated from the ancient but true literary inventions of Macpherson.
