The Madonna, After Fra Filippo Lippi’s Uffizi Masterwork
About the Item
The yellowed and peeling typewritten label on the verso reads “MADONNA, Uffizi, Florence, FRA FILIPPO LIPPI, c.1406-1469 Florentine School.” It pays tribute where tribute is due to Lippi for his most highly regarded work of art. However, the anonymous artist of this untitled piece made it his own by leaving out a few things, and instead focusing on the idealized Renaissance Mary.
The Madonna here and in the Uffizi Gallery's original are identically garbed and haloed, with hands clasped in the same devotion to prayer. The backgrounds of both pictures similarly offer a bucolic scene with a river and farm, rocky outcroppings and blue sky. Both Madonnas rest upon matching, opulently carved seats with an embroidered cushion at the elbow of each. Yet MIA are the original’s infant Christ Child, supported by a smiling putti-esque angel, and yet another child. It’s a digression important enough to tell a very different story, perhaps of the power of prayer in quiet solitude. But whatever the artist's intention might be, this is a picture worthy enough to be presented in a hand-carved gilded frame with just the palest of aqua accents, the color of a heavenly sky.
