About the Item

Painting, oil on canvas, size 105 x 130 cm without frame and 125 x 155 cm with a wonderful carved and gilded frame of the early 17th century, representing the real episode of rape of women sabines. The rape of Sabines is one of the oldest events in the history of Rome, surrounded by legends. According to tradition, Romulus, after founding Rome, turns to neighboring populations to form alliances and obtain women with whom to procreate and populate the new city. To the rejection of neighbors, he reacted with disappointment: he organized a big show to attract the inhabitants of the region and kidnap their wives; Romulus had predicted that the rat would be in a way the beginning of the fusion between the Romans and Sabines. The Roman youth did not take it voluntarily, so much so that the solution that was chosen was to use force. During the third year of his reign, Romulus decided to hide his resentment and organized solemn games, called Consualia, dedicated to the god Conso. He then ordered his followers to invite the neighboring peoples to the show: from the Ceninensi to the Antemnati, through Crustumini and Sabini, the latter settled on the nearby hill of Quirinale. The goal was to perform a gigantic kidnapping of their women in the middle of the series. A large number of people arrived with children (including many virgins and wives, also because of the desire to see the new city.) It was at this time that the Sabines, who had already been kidnapped by the Romans, threw themselves under a shower of bullets between opposing factions to divide the suitors and appease their anger. With this gesture, the two parties stopped and decided to collaborate by concluding a peace treaty, on the way that would be called since Via Sacra, thus creating the union between the two peoples of power and common citizenship, associating the two kingdoms (that of Romulus and that of Titus Tatius) leaving the city where all the decisional power was transferred to continue to be called Rome, even if all the Romans were called Curiti (in memory of the homeland of Tito Tazio, Cures) who has seen its population double.
