Franck Asso (b. 1992, Bouaké, Ivory Coast) knew early on that he wanted to pursue a career in the arts. Asso specialized in painting, attaining diplomas from the Technical Center of Applied Arts (CTAA) in Bingerville, and the National School of Fine Arts in Abidjan. He then went on to become an art teacher after obtaining a Certificate of Pedagogical Ability in 2020. Asso portrays scenes from daily life with his works being exhibited in Abidjan and the West African sub-region including Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Asso uses an impressionistic approach to incorporate the traditions of African mats with flatness and fragmentation. He uses recycled materials such as newspaper, pieces of cloth and loincloths to weave his canvas and utilizes ochre tints and warm colours which evoke the warmth, joy and atmosphere of life on the African continent. Asso’s objective is to highlight his culture through the use of this traditional technique and to give it another dimension by creating a bridge between traditional and modern art. His focus revolves around the women and children of the continent, who fill the places of life he represents.
