Francks Deceus
Monday Morning #2 - Figurative Painting with African American Figures

2005

$5,500

About

Francks Deceus's Monday Morning #2 is a 24 x 30 inches mixed media work on canvas. The work is partitioned in two distinct images. On the left side the artist depicted a group of African American figures standing against a yellow background. On the right side, over a white background, a donkey is plowing. This work belong to a series titled "Every Day People". As the artist explains "this series was inspired by the great migration of the 1940, 50s, and 60s where large amounts of African Americans relocated to northern cities in search of a better life. Artists like Jacob Lawrence used this subject in great volume, but I was more interested in the outcome of the migration rather than the migration itself. In this body of work I was trying to illustrate the success of those migrants in comparison to the rural south they left behind, as they strive for a better life." The style and technique used for this artwork, like the others belonging to the same series, has the linearity and straightforwardness of the most successful Naive art. The lack of ornamentation and tridimensionality and the simplicity of the pink and black dresses cut out into the yellow background gives to each scene a penetrating immediacy. Francks F. Deceus was born in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. He moved to NYC when he was nine years old. He currently resides and maintains a studio in Brooklyn, NY. He received a B.A. in sociology from the Long Island University, NY, in 1992. He has studied printmaking at the Bob Blackburn Printmaking Workshop. In February 2008 he was the recipient, of the Samella Lewis Award. Stylistically his work incorporates many of the aesthetic forms of artists like Norman Lewis and Howarddena Pindell, as well as reverberating some of the artistic strains of his native Haiti. His modernist style combines figurative, abstract, and layered elements and relies heavily on a simplification of form, deliberately limiting the color palette range. His solo exhibitions include the Pounder-Kone Art Space, Los Angeles; Tilford Art Group, Los Angeles. Group exhibitions include the Brooklyn Museum, NY; Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora Arts (MOCADA), Brooklyn, NY; The National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis, TN; Gallery M, New York, NY; and Hampton University, Hampton, VA. His work is in private and public collections, including Xavier University, New Orleans, LA, and the Schomburg Center, New York Public Library, NY. His work has been featured in publications such as The International Revue of African-American Art and The Village Voice, as well as being included in " 100 New York Painters ", by Cynthia Maris Dantzic, Schiffer Publishing. related keywords: Migration, City Scenes, Family, Racial Identity, Ethnic Identity, Caribbean, Human Figure, Painting, African American
