About the Item

Francks Deceus’ Mumbo Jumbo #5 is part of the Mumbo Jumbo series the artist has been working on since 2019. The artist writes “As a Haitian immigrant while growing up in Brooklyn during the 1980s, it was difficult to maintain social and cultural ties to more than one place at a time. This created a constant struggle with identity and acceptance. Despite my Haitian nationality, I am too often confronted by, and subjugated to, harsh scrutiny solely based on color, while polarizing my image and marginalizing its complex inner value. My current body of work revisits this struggle, with an eye toward revealing my life-long dialog about nationality, as it relates to blackness and the contemporary demands of a modern era. In one series of works, a hooded male figure is smiling while wrapped in a fire hose and is being propelled in random directions. The imagery in this set of works is both deliberately dispossessing and amusingly playful almost in equal measures, hence the title “Mumbo Jumbo.” The similarly titled novel by author Ishmael Reed inspires the series, “Mumbo Jumbo.” In the novel, as in this collection of works, Mr. Reed attempts to capture the complexities of the African American identity and how it is affronted and thrown askew by external pressures. Yet in an act of quite defiance, the protagonist’s smile is an immediate reminder to the viewer of his humanity, and inner self. Also embedded in the work is a faded tribute to the African diasporic influence on Haitian culture. The symbols represented in the work are often used in voodoo ceremonies, derived from venerable cultural links to the African continent. This additive or duality is designed to redirect the viewer’s attention towards cultural markers in regards to identity and blackness, as opposed to racial precepts. Although hefty in terms of subject matter and pervasive in its relevance to our everyday lives, my goal in this work and the themes it seeks to explore, is to create a platform for meaningful discourse in hopes of fostering a state of collectivity and consciousness.” Francks F. Deceus was born in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. He moved to NYC when he was nine years old. He currently resides and maintains a studio in Brooklyn, NY. He received a B.A. in sociology from the Long Island University, NY, in 1992. He has studied printmaking at the Bob Blackburn Printmaking Workshop. Mumbo Jumbo BK#1 - Ironic Figurative Painting with Pink and Blue Colors
By Francks Deceus
Located in New York, NY
Francks Deceus’ “Mumbo Jumbo BK#1” is a 20 x 16 inch acrylic paint, color pencil, and collage painting on canvas. The main colors are pink, blue and red. The image is very playful, showing a man dressed as a superhero standing next to an entangled fire hose. The title “Mumbo Jumbo, is inspired by Ishmael Reed’s book under the same titled, where he attempted to capsulate the complexities of the African American experience. For Deceus is about capturing the complexity of his experience as an immigrant from Haiti back in the 1970s. A series of very colorful and playful works, focusing on the adventures of one figure named “Cappy”. The name is derived from Deceus family home town, Cap Haitien. Cappy is Deceus alter-ego; The images are intentionally drawn in the vein of comic strips with Cappy as the superhero. He goes out in the world and has to solve the kind of frightening experiences Deceus knew about as a Haitian immigrant, which in the paintings are ironically represented by the hose/snake snarling Cappy. Stylistically Deceus work incorporates many of the aesthetic forms of artists like Norman Lewis and Howardena...

abstract NINETEEN Acrylic and collage on canvas 2018 36x48 Abstract NINETEEN NINETEEN is one of the largest paintings of this ever growing body of work by Aaron A. Young. Referencing the work of Sam Francis, Frankenthaller and deKooning, the abstract color fields and interrupted lines are meant to draw the viewer into the piece to find an ever evolving composition. Using a continuously changing palate of colors and a multitude of layers of paint and collage, the work conveys texture and weight derived from obliterating some details of the past while accentuating others. With this, the process of the piece is preserved, creating almost an archeological experience for the viewer; discovering details the deeper you look. Hard edges meet soft, spontaneous and organic drips of paint overlap with meticulously created linework. The typography of old newspaper is hidden, yet also framed, by brushstrokes making windows into the inner layers of the work. There is always something to discover. Aaron A. Young is a Queens, NY based abstract artist. Starting his ambition for painting with a Bob Ross Painting...
