About the Item

A beautiful study of a maiden reading by a window, this tranquil scene is imbued with a soft light that catches the delicate shoulders of an elegant young lady absorbed in a text. The artist was a good friend of Charles Dickens and this scene very much has the feel of a snapshot from one of the author's stories. Frank Stone (1800-1859) A maiden reading Signed to the reverse (beneath the backing board) Oil on board, circular 11¾ inches diameter - painting only 18 x 18 inches with frame Frank Stone was a painter of historical genre and portraits. He was born in Manchester and began to study art at the age of 24 and is believed to have been self taught. He moved to London in 1831. He was proficient at both oil and watercolour painting, exhibiting at both the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Academy. Both he and his son Marcus Stone, also a painter, were friends of Charles Dickens and he provided illustrations for some of his books including The Haunted Man and Nicholas Nickleby.
