Oil on canvas

Pupil of Edward Dujardin (1817-1889) and Joseph Dyckmans (1811-1888) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, then of Baron Henri Leys (1815-1869), Vinck made his debut at the Salon d'Anvers in 1846 with a painting that will then be exhibited in the United States in Philadelphia.
He then left for Paris accompanied by a fellow artist and copied the masters of the Louvre there.
Back in Antwerp in 1852, he took part in the Prix de Rome and was then beaten by Ferdinand Pauwels (1830-1904). However, Vinck was still able to accompany Pauwels to Italy thanks to his father's employer who offered him the trip. On the road to Rome, the artist took the opportunity to stay some time in Paris where he was able to meet, among others, the Belgian romantic painter Gustaf Wappers (1803-1874) who had just resigned from his post as director of the Académie d 'Antwerp.
After nine months spent in Paris, Vinck then decided to take the direction of Rome. Shortly after his arrival, he sent a painting to Antwerp which was met with great success by the critics, which earned him financial assistance from the Belgian government.
Back in Antwerp in 1856, Vinck was invited by the painter Florent Mols-Brialmont (1811-1896) to join him on a trip to the Middle East. He then spent the year traveling to Egypt and Palestine.
After his marriage in 1859, our painter moved to Brussels. Failing to achieve the desired success in the Belgian capital, Vinck returned to Antwerp in 1866 and set to work with Baron Henri Leys, who then enjoyed an international reputation. Under the influence of the master, he began to focus more on historical paintings to the detriment of religious painting. He then made several shipments to the Salons in Paris between 1869 and 1874.
Vinck then became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1885.
In Antwerp, Franz Vinck obtained numerous official orders such as the decoration of the Hall of Honor of the Town Hall. He also made seven stations of the Stations of the Cross in Antwerp Cathedral. Abroad, he made all the Stations of the Cross in the churches of Saint Nicolas in Boulogne-sur-Mer and St Cuthbert, Earls Court in London.
Medalist in Brussels, Vienna, London, Philadelphia, Lyon, Dunkirk, Vinck was made a Knight of the Order of Leopold.
Known above all for his religious and historical paintings, Vinck was strongly influenced by his masters Dyckmans and Leys. Like them, he took as a source of inspiration the 17th century, which he transcribed in painting in a meticulous and colorful style through genre scenes or historical events from Belgian national history.

Exhibition: French Watercolour Society, 11th exhibition, Galerie Georges Petit, 8, rue de Sèze, Paris. Catalogue number: 125
This classic drawing but tinted with symbolism is an excellent example of the talents of illustrator of Albert Maignan, a facet of his art that he developed significantly from 1883.
It is one of five watercolours in “black ivory” created by Maignan to illustrate the Polyeucte from Cornelius, a book specially published by Mame Editions (for which Maignan worked a lot) for the Universal Exhibition of 1889. These watercolours were exhibited in 1889 at the famous Galerie Georges Petit (which hosted the 11th exhibition of the French Water Color Society) under No. 124/125/126/127/128 (Maignan exposed another illustrative drawing for “Boileau” under No. 129).
Each drawing illustrating an episode of all five acts of the tragedy.
Our work represents the moment when Pauline (daughter of Felix, Roman senator and governor of the province of Armenia) regains his former suitor Severus (a noble Roman general) and explains that she is now married to Polyeucte (a lord of Armenia) and she can see him again. The scene is set in a garden with a small temple of Vesta, where Pauline has filed an offering; the Pauline confidante named Stratonice, stands at his side, while Severus was accompanied by his servant Fabian. The drawing is captioned by Pauline words to Severus: “Yes I love Severus, and not doing as an excuse”
The book was printed in 800 copies, containing compositions from Maignan etched by Emile Boivin...

"Lovers in the Park” by German/French Artist Ferdinand Heilbuth
By Ferdinand Heilbuth
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A Classic romantic movement oil painting on wood panel depicting two lovers. They are dressed in Renaissance almost theatrical garments and they sit intimately close to one another on a bench. The atmospheric background is set in the middle of a wooded park in the early evening hours before dusk. Their faces are almost in shadow as the brilliant orange/red sun sets behind them. The painting is signed F. Heilbuth on the right hand bottom corner of the canvas and is dated ’76 in reference to 1876. It is set in a gold painted wood frame.

Ferdinand Heilbuth, (1826-1889), was a German-born French painter. He was born in Hamburg in 1826, and died in Paris in 1889 having become a French citizen in 1876, the same year he painted this work. He is buried in Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
