FRANZ ROUBAUD (Frants Alekseevish Rubo) (1856-1928) “THE LANCER” oil on panel, 16 x 12cm (6 1/4 x 4 3/4in) signed lower left painted c.1890 frame size: 35 x 31cm Franz Roubaud was a Russian painter who created some of the largest and most famous panoramic paintings of the genre. Roubaud was born on 15 June 1856 in Odessa and attended an art school there. In 1877 he went to Munich, where he studied at the Munich Academy. He then settled in Saint Petersburg, working in the Imperial Academy of Arts and painting huge panoramas of historical battles such as the “Siege of Achulgo” (1896, Tiflis, no longer extant), “Siege of Sevastopol” (unveiled in 1905, damaged by a German bomb in 1942, restored in the 1950s), and “Battle of Borodino” (1911, moved to Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow in 1962). In 1913, Roubaud left Russia for Munich, where he died on 13 March 1928. This picture of a proud, solitary horseman is a beautiful intimate example of Roubaud’s work. A noted painter of battles and equestrian portraits, he shares many of the typical aesthetic concerns of 19th century genre painting. The distinctive, Eastern feel of the scene shows Roubaud closely in tune with the Orientalist movement. He parallels their penchant for the exotic and delight in rich textiles and glowing colours, representing the rider in full costume on a fine attired horse, reminiscent of similar characters in Mariano Fortuny’s work. The truthful intensity with which Roubaud depicts the dazzling sunlight, turning the plain into a shimmering mirage, and the spontaneous, vividly chromatic portrayal of the Lancer as he parades by, all suggest the artist captured this scene as it actually happened before his eyes. In this he follows in the footsteps of Delacroix whose colourful studies “au vol” (quickly, on the spot) of Arab life were at the root of the Orientalist development. His work is held in a number of public collections including the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pinakotek in Munich.
