About the Item

In “Hollywood,” Gâteaux & Toiles constructs a seductive yet enigmatic scene where classic Hollywood glamour collides with contemporary pop surrealism. At its center, a striking Marilyn Monroe-inspired figure reclines effortlessly in a bold pink armchair, exuding both nostalgia and ghostly detachment. Her alluring yet distant gaze cements her as both an icon and an enigma—forever immortalized in Hollywood’s mythology, yet perpetually untouchable. The setting unfolds as a hyper-stylized dreamscape, where neon pink sofas, lime-green pillows, and deep emerald walls create a surreal contrast, distorting light in an almost liquid manner. The Hollywood sign, traditionally an external landmark, appears inside the space, further blurring the boundaries between reality and illusion, interior and exterior, celebrity and fantasy. Black-and-white abstract artworks line the walls, their cryptic figures hinting at the faceless masses behind Hollywood’s relentless machine. A rebellious splash of green paint disrupts the bottom right corner, resisting the illusion of perfection—as if the artwork itself is pushing back against its polished aesthetic. This deliberate imperfection serves as a commentary on the constructed nature of fame, beauty, and luxury, exposing how even the most flawless façade is subject to distortion and decay. Far from being a simple tribute to Hollywood’s golden age, “Hollywood” is a bold critique of its contradictions. Glamour is omnipresent yet artificial, beauty is both celebrated and commodified, and the figures who define an era remain frozen in time—eternal icons, yet never fully real. Through bold color contrasts, surreal composition, and subversive materiality, Gâteaux & Toiles invites the viewer to question Hollywood’s shimmering illusion and the narratives it perpetuates.

“Good artists borrow. Great artists steal.” A quote oft attributed to various sources that was never actually uttered by any of them. Though Mark Twain elaborated on the sentiment: “Ninety-nine parts of all things that proceed from the intellect are plagiarisms.” In the Framed Series, I use my 1% contribution to combine issues of consumption with my autobiography. I paint copies of copies of paintings within paintings to reference the appropriation, commodification, and altered continuum of art. My paintings of paintings...
