About the Item

This artwork titled "New Orleans, French Quarter" c.1970, is an oil painting on hard board by noted American artist Gene Elmore, 1927-2015. It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The hard board size is 24 x 20 inches, framed size is 28.75 x 24.75 inches. Framed in original wooden ornate beige frame. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Painter Gene Elmore is well known in the Monterey, Carmel area of California for his land-seascapes, architectural, floral and figurative paintings that are highly colorful and both realistic and abstract with expressive linearity. He uses large areas of colors to create flat spaces. His method has been to sketch on the spot and then use them later to complete paintings in his studio. He has been a member of the Carmel Art Association since the 1950s and became a life member. He was one of the founders of the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art. Born in Findley, Ohio, Elmore earned a BA in Psychology from Bowling Green University in Ohio and also minored in art, studying with Karl Richards. He then studied art in California--- one year at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and four years at the Carmel Art Institute with Patricia and John Cunningham. He traveled in Europe, Mexico, and Japan where he remained for nearly two years near Nagasake. He taught oil painting for one year at the Cunningham's school on the Isle of Capri in Italy. Although he enjoyed his travels in Europe, he saw it as a place to view work by masters who were dead and was anxious to return to America where new ideas and contemporary styles stimulated him. From 1953, he lived on the Monterey Peninsula, and in 1958, won first prize for his painting "Pink Jazz," a trumpet on a chair, in the art contest for the first Monterey Jazz Festival. A version of that original painting is now used as the poster to publicize this festival. Elmore signs his paintings with a red star before his last name.
