About the Item
San Francesco Saverio (Saint Francis Xavier), one of the most influential Christian missionaries in history. He was born into a noble Basque family in the Kingdom of Navarre, now part of Spain. He studied at the University of Paris, where he became friends with Ignatius of Loyola. Initially ambitious and focused on worldly success, Francis was deeply influenced by Ignatius, eventually joining him in a life of religious commitment.
In 1534, Francis Xavier became one of the founding members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), taking vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. He was ordained a priest in 1537.
His missionary work began in India (1542–1549), where King John III of Portugal, sent him. He worked among Portuguese settlers, local Christians, and the Paravas (a fishing caste in Tamil Nadu), revitalizing the faith and converting many. He learned local languages and emphasized catechism and education.
He also travelled to Malacca, the Moluccas (Indonesia), and other areas, spreading Christianity among isolated communities. He was one of the first European missionaries in Japan, arriving there in 1549. He introduced Christianity to Kagoshima, learning Japanese and adapting his message to local culture. Though met with resistance from some Buddhist monks and leaders, he laid the groundwork for later Jesuit missions.
His final goal was to enter mainland China (1552), but he died of fever on Shangchuan Island, just off the coast, before he could enter. He was only 46 years old at his death.
This beautiful painting is attributed to the Genovese School. They were a group of painters and artistic activity centered around Genoa, Italy, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries, with influence continuing into the 18th century. Genoa, being a wealthy maritime republic, became a hub for rich commissions—especially from powerful merchant families—which shaped the distinct style of its artists.
Genoese art reflects the luxury and sophistication of the city’s elite. Paintings often have rich fabrics, lavish settings, and a sense of theatricality. While rooted in the Baroque tradition, the Genovese school developed a unique take on it—less dramatic and more elegant and lyrical, with a refined palette and graceful compositions.
Genoa’s location meant it absorbed influences from Venetian colorism (deep, rich hues) and Roman and Florentine drawing traditions. Some artists from this school (especially those influenced by Caravaggio or his followers) employed chiaroscuro—but again, often with more restraint than in Rome or Naples.
Common subjects included biblical scenes, saints, allegories, and mythological figures—always painted with an eye for splendor and elegance.
