Circumcision Christ Lairesse Flemish Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17th Century

1660-1699

About the Item

Gérard de Lairesse (Liège 1641 - Amsterdam 1711), attributed Circumcision of Christ Oil on canvas, 120 x 102 cm., In frame 138 x 119 cm. The painting, of excellent quality and conservation, illustrates a passage narrated in the Gospel of Luke (2,21-24); According to Jewish law, eight days after birth, all male Jews had to undergo the ritual of circumcision. It is an episode in the life of Jesus intended as an anticipation of the Passion, as it represents the first occasion in which the blood of Christ is shed. In the center of the canvas, Jesus is circumcised by the rabbi doctor, behind whom we recognize Joseph supporting him, while Mary appears on the left. The suspended gesture of the elderly priest is accompanied by the attentive gazes and the expectant attitude of the other observers. The painting is interesting for its complex composition, full of characters characterized by an exceptional rendering of details, as well as for the monumental and austere environment where the scene takes place, an imposing structure punctuated by tall fluted columns. An analysis of the stylistic features of the painting easily traces its execution to Gérard de Lairesse (Liège, 1641 - 1711), Dutch painter and engraver of the Golden Century, called by his contemporaries the 'Dutch Raphael' or the 'Dutch Poussin' . Observing the draft we can well grasp an accurate execution and the use of precious pigments of clear Flemish ancestry, which emanate a beautiful brightness, in line with the artist's painting technique; although his basic training is Nordic, his works are however imbued with an Italian-French classicist taste, where the influence of Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) was decisive, which we can well find in our painting . We are faced with a work characterized by a pictorial and formal perfection that only a great master can be able to achieve. The application is enhanced by an oil color rich in bright and precious pigments. The pictorial quality, which can also be observed in the details, in the extraordinarily rendered faces, and the refined palette of blues, greens, reds and ocher, are all elements that confirm his authorship. Remarkable in the canvas is the arrangement of the figures, powerfully sculptural, with their dresses shaped by rich drapery and marked by a chromatic choice that is still completely linked to the Dutch ideal of the schools of Utrecht and Amsterdam. Excellent storage conditions. The painting, like all our objects, is sold with a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law (FIMA). For more information, please contact us.

This pleasant painting, depicting a pair of winged cherubs, is attributed to Genoese Giovan Battista Merano (Genoa 1632 - Piacenza 1698), trained in Genoa first in the workshop of Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari, and then of Valerio Castello, of whom he became one of the best students. It was probably the latter who advised the student to stay in the then Duchy of Parma to study Correggio and Parmigianino, as he had done in his time. During this first stay in Parma Giovanni Battista worked on the fresco decoration of the oratory...

  • Madonna Maria Piola Paint Oil on canvas 17/18th Century Old master Religious

Anton Maria Piola (Genoa, 1654 - 1715) circle Madonna and Child Genoese school of the second half of the 17th century Oil on canvas 93 x 74 cm.- In antique frame 110 x 92 cm. (Work with expertise by Dr. Arabella Cifani) In the pleasing work proposed, depicting a classical Nativity scene, the Madonna is immortalised in adoration as she gently holds the sheet on which the Child is lying, with a gesture of protection and pride that facilitates an atmosphere of intimate recollection, in addition to the presence of three cherubs at the top. The stylistic analysis of the canvas can easily be traced back to a painter of the Genoese school and active during the 17th century, specifically with the devotional works from the workshop of Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627-1703), an absolute protagonist of Genoese Baroque culture. Piola was the owner of the most important city painting workshop of the time, known as 'Casa Piola', where his sons Paolo Gerolamo and Anton Maria also collaborated. His production, which specialised in a type of highly decorative, profane and allegorical paintings, destined for the decoration of Genoese patrician palaces, also included a refined series of works of a religious nature. In particular, the style of our beautiful breast painting...

  • Antique English 19th century marine scene
    By William Anderson
    Located in Woodbury, CT
Outstanding English late 18th / early 19th century marine scene by one of Britain's best known and sought after painters. William (or Wiliam) Anderson (1757 – 27 May 1837) was a Scottish artist specializing in maritime and patriotic themes. He was well-regarded for his detailed and accurate portraits of ships under sail, exhibiting his works annually in London between 1787 and 1811 and then occasionally until 1834. Anderson influenced other artists, notably John Ward and others of the Hull school. Anderson's early life is obscure, but he is known to have trained as a shipwright before moving to London to become a maritime painter when he was about 30. His training served him well as a painter, providing "a practical nautical knowledge" of his subjects. He earned a reputation for "accuracy and refinement of detail" and was admired for his bright, clear colours. He worked in both oils and watercolours. He based his style on that of well-known Dutch maritime...
