About the Item

Oil on Canvas. The painting comes with expertise by art historian Dr. Giuseppe Sava. Protagonist of the scene of open-air market is a cherry seller, who wears a flashy straw hat and sits beside a basket of such fruit set on a wooden bench, next to a memorial stone on which the stadia rests. With her smiling, almost winking gaze turned toward the viewer, she is accepting the advances of the man who, behind her back, is resting her a hand on the shoulder, with a lascivious look, while two players on the left improvise a concertino. The composite and cheerful group harks back to the production of Giacomo Francesco Cipper, known as the Todeschini (1664 -1736), a painter of Austrian origin but Lombard in training and painting style, who was a "storyteller of peasants, peddlers intent on their daily occupations or amusements," a specialist in market scenes, outdoor concerts, card players, scenes of humble daily life realized with laughable caricature forcings and a search for comic effect. Cipper drew this narrative style from the Danish painter known as Monsù Bernardo, who was long active in Italy between Bergamo and Milan: in particular, from him he derived the predilection for everyday stories and humble characters, as well as the impertinent nature of such characters, who seek the attention of the 'observer through a gaze fixed on him. Also in this painting the woman protagonist pins her mischievous gaze on the 'observer, smiling with complicity and irony at the game of courtship of which the three men make her a protagonist, implying a "market" that is no longer just about cherries. In his expertise, Dr. Sava points out the stylistic and typological relationships of this painting with other Cipper figures, supporting the attribution; stylistic evolution in the formal and technical aspects of his works is also explained-the colors lightening, with an 'obvious predilection for ochers, hazelnuts, sage green, among to which dusty blue creeps in; the milky backdrops the more subdued luminosity and the less plastic chiaroscuro-a development that allows the work to be placed in his early 1700s production. The painting has been restored and re-tinted. It is presented in adapted antique frame.
