About the Item
Gio Colucci (Italian 1892-1974) Untitled: Abstract Forms/Sky. Gouache on paper laid down on matt board. Archival framing under glass. Circa 1930's - 40's? Signed lower right. This piece is a true abstraction. The colors are vivid and include yellows, reds, blacks, greens and blues. He did a series of these abstractions and included fish, animals and torsos. The image is 14 1/2" x 17 1/2," paper size is 16 3/4" x 19 1/2," and it is framed under glass at 21 1/2" x 24 1/2" x 2."
Born in Florence, Italy in 1892, he moved to Paris in 1911 to study architecture and then settled in Cairo in 1914. He returned to Paris in 1919 and exhibited at the Allard Gallery. In 1921 and 1923, he participated in the Salon d’Automne and in the Salon des Surindépendants with Gleizes, Herbin, Duchamp-Villon.
Known as "the king of color", in his different periods of work - cubist, expressionist, abstract. In 1929, Gio Colucci exhibited at the Vavin-Raspail Gallery. In 1939 he took part in the "Groupe Eclectique" with Béothy, Freunlich, Gonzalez, Metsinger and Survage at the Berthe Weill Gallery.
Colucci had successful exhibitions in 1945 at the Christofle Gallery, in 1947, at the Salon des Décorateurs, in 1952 at the Vallauris Museum in Provence and the Odéon Gallery, in 1954, Colucci at the Grand Palais Museum.
In 1956, Colucci founded, along with Gino Severini, the Italian School of Arts.
In 1959, a retrospective was held at the Juster’s Gallery in New York as well as at the Rodin Museum in Paris. A retrospective of his work is organized in New York in 1963. The Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris exhibited several polychromed wood-based sculptures, ceramics but also painted and sticked Arcopal glass by Colucci.

Gio Colucci
Gio Colucci, also known in France as Geo Colucci, was a painter, engraver, illustrator, ceramist and sculptor. From 1921, he exhibited his engravings in various salons. He worked with French publishers specializing in the illustrated books of high bibliophilia, and he also delivered a series of remarkable prints for texts by Barbey d'Aurevilly, Pierre Loti, Guy Maupassant, Octave Mirbeau, etc. In 1956, Colucci and Gino Severini founded the School of Italian Art in Paris. A major retrospective on his work took place in New York in 1959, when he also exhibited at the Quadrennial in Rome. Colucci died in 1974.
