After Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato, Holy Family

19th Century

About the Item

19thC Follower of Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato (Sassoferrato, 1609 - Rome, 1685) Holy family Oil on canvas, 80 x 88 cm Framed, 114 x 120 cm Giovanni Battista Salvi, better known as il Sassoferrato after his hometown in the Marche region, was a significant exponent of Baroque in central Italy. His artistic training began in the workshop of his father, Tarquinio Salvi, also a painter, whose works remain in the church of San Francesco in Sassoferrato. He is believed to have had a brief apprenticeship with Domenichino, an influence reflected in the classicism and serenity of his compositions. Moving to Rome around 1641, Sassoferrato distinguished himself by a painting style that looked to Renaissance classicism, particularly Raphael. This predilection of his for a more archaic artistic language made him a distinguishable figure in the context of the height of the Roman Baroque, which was dominated by a more pronounced dynamism and scenic effects. His production was extensive and focused mainly on religious themes, particularly images of the Virgin Mary. His Madonnas are characterized by great purity of line, delicate colors, and an expression of gentle and serene devotion, which met with favor among religious and private patrons. Among his most famous works are the Madonna of the Rosary (1643), an altarpiece for the basilica of Santa Sabina in Rome, considered his masterpiece, and the Madonna Orante, preserved in Sassoferrato. Despite his more contemplative style and less in line with the dominant trends of his time, Sassoferrato enjoyed undeniable fame and his works were appreciated for their elegance and deep spirituality. He died in Rome in 1685, leaving a body of works that testify to a unique interpretation of classicism in the context of seventeenth-century Italy. The painting in question, by the hand of an artist who in the early nineteenth century took up the calm atmospheres of Calvi's painting, echoes the Holy Family in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome. Sassoferrato's Holy Family preserved at the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome is a work that well represents the artist's intimate and devotional style, best embodying his ability to instill a deep serenity and gentleness in sacred figures. The figures, depicted as half or full-length, appear to be placed in a cozy, intimate space that invites contemplation. The faces of the characters are characterized by quiet devotion. The Virgin Mary has a particularly sweet and thoughtful expression turned toward the Child. St. Joseph is portrayed with an air of serene protection and humility. The baby Jesus, depicted at a tender age, dozes innocently in his mother's arms. Sassoferrato's palette consists of light and bright colors, with a predilection for blue, red and white tones, creating a visual harmony that contributes to a sense of peace and spirituality. The design is careful and the lines are soft, helping to define the forms with clarity and elegance, reflecting the influence of Raphaelesque classicism. The overall composition, with its close figures and restrained gestures, creates an atmosphere of family recollection and intimacy, inviting the viewer to meditation on the mystery of the Incarnation and the sacredness of the family. The Roman Holy Family provides an opportunity to appreciate the mastery of an artist who, at the height of the Baroque, was able to maintain a dialogue with the Renaissance tradition, offering a personal and touching interpretation of sacred themes. The reproduction of this subject in the nineteenth century is clear evidence of the great visual fortune of this artist's compositions centuries after his period of activity.

By Angelo Monticelli, Dancing Putti
Located in Milan, IT
Angelo Monticelli (Milan, 1778-1837), attr. Dancing putti Oil on canvas, 122.5 x 131 cm The canvas presented here, referable to the 19th century, constituted an exquisite example of a painting made to decorate a boiserie, as evidenced by the particularity of the format and the ornamental subject matter. The theme of dancing putti takes up a widely used and experimented model around the 1620s, on which the greatest artists tried their hand: pordenone, author of the Dance of Putti now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, for example, was able to make use of multiple visual models to fine-tune this complex and original composition, such as having known Marcantonio Raimondi's famous engraving with a gyre of cupids, derived from an invention of Raphael himself and dated between 1517 and 1520. Over the following centuries, the fame of this prissy subject was never diminished. In fact, the work under consideration can be attributed to the hand of 18th-century artist Angelo Monticelli, who specialized in tempera drawing and was a pupil of painter Andrea Appiani (1754-1817), active mainly in Lombardy, where, for the Teatro alla Scala he designed the figures of the box parapets (1807) and the curtain (1821). In 1826, during the repainting of Ferrara's Municipal Theater, Monticelli decorated the plafond with an Apotheosis of Lodovico Ariosto. The curtain of the Rossini Theater in Pesaro is also by his hand. For the Duke of Lodi Francesco Melzi...
