About the Item
The painting depicts Jephthah and his daughter, two Old Testament biblical characters. The girl is depicted in profile, dressed in the clothing of a seventeenth-century Venetian lady: the low-cut dress, tightened at the waist
by a golden belt and fluffy sleeves; blonde hair gathered and braided with strings of pearls, dangling earrings in
the ears. With one hand she brings a cloth to her face to wipe away her tears, while with the other she holds her
father's hand. Jephthah instead wears armor, a heavy red cloak rests on his right arm and seems to point out
of the picture; the suffering expression.

View AllDavid and Abigail, fourth decade of the 17th century
Located in Milan, IT
The painting, done in oil on canvas, depicts the meeting between King David and Abigail, as narrated in the biblical text from the First Book of Samuel (I Samuel 25:1-34).
David, left without food in the wilderness with his army, seeks relief from the wealthy Nabal, who contemptuously denies him any help, ungrateful of the benevolence he previously received from the king. Upon hearing the rejection, the ruler intends to take revenge by killing his entire lineage. Abigail, Nabal's beautiful and wise wife, decides to right the wrong and bring David plenty of food and gifts. In the king's presence the woman humbles herself, winning his forgiveness and benevolence. Soon afterwards widowed, she will in fact become his bride.
The broad scene depicts the climax of the Old Testament episode, the moment when the woman prostrates herself before David and his servants prepare to deliver the gifts.
The biblical event is here a pretext, as is customary in modern-age painting, for staging the colorful description of a sumptuous procession, which can be divided into two parts, almost two wings of a crowd divided specularly: on the left David with his dignitaries and the army; on the other, Abigail's retinue, handmaids, servants leading dromedaries and donkeys laden with food.
The crowded group of figures is set in a natural proscenium: above a low horizon, barely hinted at by distant blue mountains, rises on the left side a craggy rocky cliff, the shelter of the army led by the ruler.
The 'somatic intonation of the characters, as well as the choice of metallic chromatics and the play of light on the shiny fabrics refer to a clear Flemish matrix, particularly the influence of the frothy and sumptuous painting of Rubens and Van Dyck.
As well set forth in the expert report prepared by Professor Giuseppe Sava, the work is to be attributed to Vincent Malò...

Loth and the daughters
Oil on canvas; Measurements: cm H 73 x W 93; frame H 88 x W 108 x D 5,5
The painting, of beautiful pictorial quality, depicts the biblical scene of Lot and his daughters, with Sodom set on fire in the background, and is stylistically attributable to the italian painter Giuseppe Gambarini (Italy, Bologna, 17 March 1680 - Casalecchio di Reno, 11 September 1725).
The canvas shows in the center Lot sitting and already drunk, depicted according to traditional iconography, old, gray and with long gray boat. With his left hand he grabs the wine flask that one of his daughters offers him. She is depicted kneeling and resting on large boulders of stone, described as an architectural base, dressed in a voluminous deep blue mantle, her hair covered with a humble headdress made of a knotted cloth; look at the viewer, as if to want to involve him directly in the scene. The other daughter is described on the left, from the back to the observer, with a bare back and dark hair gathered by a red ribbon. She too is intent on serving her father a cup in which to pour the wine. Around them a duck placed on a cloth, some bread and another wine flask enrich the composition describing a banquet in progress. The scene is set outdoors, where only a large tent supported by branches arranged in a hut serves as a shelter to the figures. In the background a forest landscape blends chromatically with the blue sky. To the right in the distance, is described the city of Sodom, already destroyed and on fire. Lot’s wife...
