Giulio Benso (Genoa, Italy, 1592 - 1668) Title: The Expulsion of the Merchants From the Temple Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: without frame 121 x 170 cm - with frame 144 x 193 cm Nineteenth-century shaped and gilded wooden frame Expertise by Professor Anna Orlando Publications: Anna Orlando, in Uomini e Dei. Il ‘600 genovese dei collezionisti, catalogue of the exhibition curated by A. Orlando (Palazzo della Meridiana di Genova, 19th February - 5th June 2016), Genova 2016, pp. 52, 53; Barocco spaziale - Dialoghi di luce, forma, colore fra pittura barocca e spazialismo, exhibition catalogue curated by Susanna Gualazzini, Fabio Obertelli, Carlo Scagnelli, (Piacenza, 8 December 2021 - 6 February 2022), Galleria Biffi Arte, Piacenza, pp. 23-24, 32-33, 98-99. The marvellous canvas, a masterpiece by Giulio Benso, a 17th-century Genoese painter, depicts the sacred scene of the Expulsion of the merchants from the Temple by Christ. Christ is recognisable in the centre of the composition with a whip made of cords in his hand, just as we are told in the Gospel accounts. This is one of the few cases of paintings that belongs to him. He's famous above all for drawings and printings, so it's hard to find other artworks to compare. The scene is set in a stunning architecture, probably inspired by Raphael and his "Rooms" in Vatican. In the foreground there are lot of people divided in two groups and thanks to them and their attitude the scene is really dynamic and full of energy. The work, extraordinarily still on the first canvas, provides a clear example of Benso's artistic ability, which is based on swirling constructions of bodies.
