Dancing putti
Oil on canvas, 122.5 x 131 cm
The canvas presented here, referable to the 19th century, constituted an exquisite example of a painting made to decorate a boiserie, as evidenced by the particularity of the format and the ornamental subject matter.
The theme of dancing putti takes up a widely used and experimented model around the 1620s, on which the greatest artists tried their hand: pordenone, author of the Dance of Putti now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, for example, was able to make use of multiple visual models to fine-tune this complex and original composition, such as having known Marcantonio Raimondi's famous engraving with a gyre of cupids, derived from an invention of Raphael himself and dated between 1517 and 1520. Over the following centuries, the fame of this prissy subject was never diminished.
In fact, the work under consideration can be attributed to the hand of 18th-century artist Angelo Monticelli, who specialized in tempera drawing and was a pupil of painter Andrea Appiani (1754-1817), active mainly in Lombardy, where, for the Teatro alla Scala he designed the figures of the box parapets (1807) and the curtain (1821). In 1826, during the repainting of Ferrara's Municipal Theater, Monticelli decorated the plafond with an Apotheosis of Lodovico Ariosto. The curtain of the Rossini Theater in Pesaro is also by his hand. For the Duke of Lodi Francesco Melzi...

Expert opinion Prof. Alberto Crispo
The painting shown here depicts peasants playing bowls near a farmhouse, while one of them offers sweets to a little girl. The canvas, in my opinion, can be traced back to the hand of Pietro Domenico Olivero (Turin, August 1, 1679 - January 13, 1755), as revealed by comparisons with other works by the artist, such as the Peasants' Feast already at the Gilberto Zabert Gallery in Turin, where we find an entirely similar layout, with the figures crowded around the building, placed on the left, and some household goods piled up on the right, including a copper cauldron almost identical to the one sketched in our painting. But see also other similar subjects painted by the Turin-based artist, such as the Game of Bowls already at the Cantore Gallery in Modena or the other version on the Genoese market in 2019, which, although radically different compositionally, confirm the painter's interest in playful themes and manifest the same ways in delineating characters, with synthetic and robust brushstrokes. The artist was born in Turin, in the parish of St. Thomas, on August 1, 1679 to Giovanna and Francesco, a carver by profession. He trained at the workshop of the painter and architect Melchiorre Baldassarre Bianco. He was esteemed by Victor Amadeus II of Savoy, who commissioned paintings for the Venaria Reale (1714), the Royal Palace of Turin (1716), and Rivoli Castle (1724), as well as by his ministers Pietro Mellarède and Carlo Vincenzo Ferrero di Roasio marquis of Ormea whose collections counted many of the painter's works. His success on the Turin art scene earned him election as prior of the Accademia di San Luca in Turin (1726). In 1731 he painted the eleven canvases with Stories of Franciscan Saints in the sacristy of the church of St. Thomas in Turin, while in 1734 he made the Marriage at Cana for the sanctuary of Oropa. The Savoy commissions continued with the ten canvases executed for the castle of Agliè (1737), the decoration of the third room of the New Archives in the Royal Palace of Turin (1739-41), and the thirty or so works for the hunting lodge at Stupinigi (1748-51). The painter also measured himself in designing sets for the Teatro Regio in Turin (1745-46). He made his will on November 15, 1754, and died in his hometown on January 13, 1755. Olivero's genre scenes, such as the one commented on here, reveal a focus on Flemish painting, particularly by David Teniers the Younger, Peter Mauritz Bolckman, Theodor Helmbreker, and Cornelis de Wael, as well as Roman bamboozlers such as Pieter van Laer, Michelangelo Cerquozzi, and Jan Miel...

White Roses Oil Florence Academy Oil The Enchanting Fragrance of Roses
Located in Houston, TX
Samuel S.Hoskins Statement on White Roses:
"White Roses" is an endeavor to evoke the enchanting fragrance of roses. One of the most delightful aspects of living in Florence, Italy, is cycling through the outskirts of the city in spring after a refreshing rain shower. The rain seems to awaken the scents of various flora. I utilized Viridian Green and Cerulean Blue to capture the cool contrast that rain imparts to the flowers, seeking to encapsulate the sensory experience of those post-rain, blossoming moments.

"Another Dress Rehearsal" Oil on Canvas Fantasy Surreal celebrated London artist
By George Underwood
Located in Southampton, NY
In continuing with representing fine artists that are connected to the music industry we are please to announce that we are the only gallery in the United States representing the oil on canvas paintings of acclaimed British artist George Underwood. That is great news for collectors based in the United States. They do not have to pay any import fees or international shipping costs or any international tariffs which are costly. So this is a great opportunity to purchase a work of art by this acclaimed British artist. His paintings have been described as Magical with a touch of Fantasy.
When David Bowie, a life long friend of George Underwood, was asked about the paintings of George Underwood, Bowie said "George has, over the years, refined his work to the point where I would put him among the top figurative painters coming out of the UK.... There's a sublime isolation surrounding his subjects that really touches the viewer, the figures being both heroic and vulnerable simultaneously".
George Underwood, a life-long friend of David Bowie, were in early bands together and Underwood was asked by Bowie to created the classic cover artwork for David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" album and also for David's "Hunky Dory" album. George felt that his friend artist Terry Pastor would better create the hand colored airbrush look for the album covers so he had Terry create the cover artwork.
A fun fact is that David and George were both in the same art class taught by Peter Frampton's Dad when they were youngsters and they remained great friends throughout David's life. I have included some images of Bowie and George Underwood over the years in this listing to show the close relationship they had since they were young lads.
This oil painting by George Underwood is titled "Another Dress Rehearsal...
