About the Item

Early work of figures moving along the street in Cuernavaca to the Cathedral in Mexico by Goldie Anita Powell Harding (American, 1892-1974). Circa 1935. Tempera on Masonite. In a period rustic frame. Image Exhibited at the Women Painters of the West exhibition 1936 and Charles W, Bowers Memorial Museum, Santa Ana, California. Image size: 28.25"H x 22.25"W. Born in San Leandro, CA on Jan. 11, 1892. As a child Goldie Powell began studying art locally with Goddard Gale. Leaving Oakland High School, she studied at UC Berkeley, CSFA, and Columbia University. She taught art in the public schools of San Rafael and Oakland (1913-23) and married Joseph Harding in 1920. About 1933 she moved to southern California and lived in Santa Monica and Palm Desert where she helped form the Palm Springs Civic Art Assn. She lectured widely on modern art and was highly regarded by her many students. Mrs. Harding died in St Helena (CA) Hospital on Feb. 22, 1974. Her subjects include scenes of Mexico and California landscapes. Member: Calif. Art Club; LAAA; Calif. WC Society; Women Painters of the West.
