About the Item

Illustration by Grattan Condon for the February 8, 1930 Saturday Evening Post story entitled "Wide-Open Throttle" by A.W. Somerville, which appeared on page 56. The tension between the two railway workers is palpable and expertly painted in grisaille. Grattan S. Condon (1887-1966) was born in Eugene, OR and later settled in Oakland, CA.. He studied art in Los Angeles at the Art Students League and the School of Art & Design. By the late 1920s, he had a studio in New York City. He is best remembered for his illustrations of WWI. His work appeared in the Saturday Evening Post and Ladie's Home Journal. He died in Dayton, OH on in August 1966. Signed lower left. Framed in a silver gallery frame.
