About the Item

Greg Singley , born 1950- Artist Statement: When the sun sets in the desert South West, things appear. This is the nature of what touches me about that land. The people who lived the old ways there over a century ago knew things and depended on little else but the power in that knowledge. It is expressed in what they left behind. Their war shirts, head dresses, lances, medicine shields and ceremonial wands and their telling expressions in volumes of photography have invaded my soul and recording the impression those relics make on me is the only purpose for my painting. The American Indian was real; he personified the spirit of his land and protected its knowledge. Biography Greg Singley received his college education at Walker Collage, Jasper Alabama and the University of South Alabama, Mobile, Alabama. He attended the Ringling School of Art for his art training in Sarasota, Florida and graduated with a degree in commercial illustration. An illustrator and painter, Greg Singley has worked as a newspaper art director and illustrator at the Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona. Now living in Southern California, Greg continues his pursuit of the Western and native American culture. Greg's work includes Western landscapes, Western cowboy themes and American Indians. Early works includes impressionist floral painting and portraits. During the years in Arizona, Singley also painted Native American Indian and cowboy subjects He said: "It was the works of Paul Pletka and Fritz Scholder that brought me west" His work appeared in the film Waiting to Exhale and numerous TV broadcasts. Designer Betty Lou Phillips features Singley's work in her book French Influences. Singley was also invited to present his painting technique in the magazine International Artist, June/July 2005
