About the Item
Promenade dans le Médoc
Acrylic on cardboard
24 x 19 cm (unframed)
Signature: Lower right
Condition: Excellent, presented in a gilded wooden frame with linen inlay
In Promenade dans le Médoc, Grégoire Mathias distills the atmosphere of France’s wine country into a vibrant geometric composition, where human presence, landscape, and rhythm merge into one unified movement. Executed in the artist’s signature Diachronic Cubism, the painting suggests a leisurely walk through the Médoc — its forms unfolding like fragmented reflections of time, color, and light.
Mathias’s use of bold black contours anchors a symphony of blues, greens, and ochres, while rounded shapes and intersecting planes evoke both the organic curves of nature and the architectural rhythm of vineyards. The work captures a sense of vitality and serenity, transforming a fleeting promenade into a timeless, abstracted dance of perception.
Perfect For
Collectors of modern Cubist or abstract-figurative works
Interior designers seeking vivid, structured compositions for intimate spaces
Buyers looking for small-format originals by a French modern artist with rising international profile
Collector's Insights
Smaller works like this provide a more accessible entry point into Mathias’s catalogue, which also includes large-format acrylics on canvas.
This work complements Dégustation dans le Médoc, forming a natural visual dialogue between movement and stillness — one capturing the journey, the other the moment of pause. Together, they reveal Mathias’s sensitivity to time, rhythm, and the everyday poetry of the French landscape.

Greg Mathias, born on January 22, 1967, in Périgueux, Dordogne, was steeped in an artistic atmosphere from a young age. His father, a pioneering antiquarian bookseller, introduced vintage posters to the American market, and his mother was a bookbinder, instilling in Mathias a deep appreciation for art and literature. This rich environment laid the foundation for his creative journey. Early in his education, Mathias attended workshops with renowned artists Bertrand Piéchaud in Bordeaux and Jean Pierre Métout in Limoges. In 1985, he moved to Paris and became a guest student at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), studying under Claude Augereau. By 1986, he had officially enrolled at ENSBA and joined Augereau’s workshop, which was influenced by the cubist master Jean Metzinger. Mathias’ artistic trajectory took a significant turn in 1987 when he participated in a sculpture internship with Claude Bogratchew, contributing to the "Totem AXA" sculpture. This period marked the beginning of a lasting professional relationship with Bogratchew. Following the death of Claude Augereau in 1988, Mathias continued his studies under Pierre Buraglio. His first major exhibition in 1989 at the Galerie de la Maison des Beaux-Arts displayed abstract paintings inspired by Willem de Kooning, though it was initially met with indifference. Despite early challenges, Mathias received commendation for his diploma in 1990, which led to a prestigious exhibition at the ENSBA premises. Later that year, he received a commission from Jack Rennert to paint a large fresco in New York, which further fueled his artistic evolution. During his time in Manhattan, he developed "diachronic cubism," a unique style capturing subjects from various temporal perspectives in a single artwork. Mathias’ career gained momentum in the 1990s. He exhibited extensively in France and the United States, with significant retrospectives and commissions. His diachronic cubism style matured, characterized by its focus on representing the passage of time within a single piece. Notable works included murals for hotels and restaurants in Bordeaux and exhibitions in prominent galleries. In 2001, Mathias served as an expert in posters for Tajan, a leading French auction house, before returning fully to his art practice in 2005. His partnership with the Morateur Gallery in Los Angeles played a pivotal role in establishing his international presence. By 2011, Mathias had created several murals for various establishments, and in 2018, he showcased his creative process in an exhibition titled "L'atelier Grégoire Mathias" at the Castelet d'Excideuil. In 2020, Mathias was commissioned by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) to create a poster for United Nations Day, solidifying his role as the official artist for WFUNA. Most recently, Mathias’ exploration of diachronic cubism led him to Ireland, where he exhibited his work in Dublin this year. His connection to Ireland deepened through his homage to James Joyce, culminating in the donation of his Joyce's "Portrait aux Horloges" to the James Joyce Museum. Today, Mathias' work is exhibited in several galleries in France, New York and Dublin.

Promenade
Acrylic on wood
33.1 x 21.8 cm
A compact yet striking cubist composition by French artist Grégoire Mathias, “Promenade” explores human figures through layered geometries and rich earth tones.
“Promenade” is a refined, vertically oriented work in acrylic on wood panel by French artist Greg Mathias, a pioneer of Diachronic Cubism—an evolution of Cubism that doesn’t just fragment space, but also folds multiple moments in time into a single frame. In this composition, a solitary figure appears mid-step, portrayed through overlapping forms that subtly shift in posture and position, evoking successive instants of the same walk.
Using a palette of earthy ochres, rose-beige tones, slate blues, and deep browns, Mathias blends geometric abstraction with temporal movement. The fractured background enhances the impression of both forward motion and layered time, suggesting the silent passage of moments within a single contemplative scene.
Unlike traditional Analytical Cubism, which reduces forms to a still, spatial analysis, this piece embodies motion and transformation—hallmarks of the artist’s unique visual language. Compact in size but conceptually expansive, “Promenade” invites the viewer to witness the echo of steps already taken and those just about to occur.

In 10h à Royan, Grégoire Mathias captures a serene moment of seaside life through the geometric precision and rhythmic energy that define his Diachronic Cubism. Set against the vivid blues of the Atlantic coast, a figure enjoys a quiet morning coffee as sun and sea interplay in harmonious color blocks.
The composition’s strong lines and vibrant contrasts evoke both warmth and movement — the golden light of morning, the hum of conversation, and the timeless rhythm of a day beginning by the ocean. Mathias’s refined Cubist language transforms this simple scene into a layered meditation on leisure and perception, blending abstraction with recognizable forms.
Executed in acrylic on canvas board and signed lower left, the painting balances structure and spontaneity, revealing the artist’s unique ability to merge classic Cubist heritage with contemporary clarity.
