About the Item

The son of landscape painter Jan-Baptiste de Jonghe, Gustave Léonard de Jonghe enjoyed a long and prolific career as a genre painter. After beginning his training with his father, de Jonghe entered the atelier of Louis Gallait then of François-Josef Navez. He debuted his work at the Salon in Brussels in 1848, most likely exhibiting one or more portraits. In 1885, de Jonghe left his native Belgium for Paris, where he began painting elegant interior genre scenes concentrating on the upper-middle class. Focusing on the lives of fashionable women, de Jonghe presented them in elegant costumes, typically with a warm and welcoming disposition. He often depicted these beautiful Parisian women either in moments of religious observation or sentimentally involved with their children. For this period, and even more so in the late nineteenth century, such scenes were typical. The idea that the “beloved mother” figure embodied contentedness and familial duty had become popular. De Jonghe’s paintings found much critical success and were reproduced by several Parisian engravers. The resulting prints were popular, because they allowed Parisians to enjoy de Jonghe’s rich interiors and touching familial scenes, even if they could not purchase the original paintings. De Jonghe ensured his success by continually exhibiting in the most important venues, especially Paris’ Salon. He also showed his work abroad, exhibiting in Brussels, Amsterdam, Vienna, London, Hamburg and Berlin. In 1884, he returned to Brussels, where he established a permanent studio and home. The government of de Jonghe’s native country recognized and honored his talents and contributions by naming him to the Order of Leopold. Moreover, they purchased a number of his works for exhibition in national museums located in Antwerp, Kortrijk, Ghent and Brussels.
