Gustave Lino, born in Mulhouse on October 27, 1893, was a prominent French artist known for his exceptional work in still lifes, landscapes, and seascapes. As a young man, Lino became deeply inspired by the art world, often visiting museums in his hometown and developing a passion for painting. In 1912, at the age of 19, he moved to Marseille, where he discovered the distinctive light of Provence, which would greatly influence his work.
In 1914, Lino traveled to Algiers, where his life took a dramatic turn with the outbreak of World War I. Due to his German nationality, he was interned in Corsica, where he took up painting under the tutelage of a fellow countryman. He produced numerous artworks during this time, decorating notable places such as the Hotel Solferino in Ajaccio and the Château de Malaspena-Massa in Belgodère.
After the war, Lino returned to Algiers and studied under renowned artist Georges Rochegrosse. His talent was quickly recognized, and he exhibited his work in various prestigious Salons and galleries, including the Salon des Artistes Français in 1926 and the Danton Gallery in Paris in 1927.
Lino’s artistic journey took him to Spain, where he studied chiaroscuro before returning to Algeria. He was captivated by the work of Albert Marquet, whose use of light and transparent color became Lino’s ideal. Specializing in still lifes, Algerian landscapes, and seascapes, Lino developed a distinctive, colorful palette with an emphasis on blues and harmonious linework.
Throughout his career, Lino traveled extensively. He spent time in Tunisia, the Balearic Islands, and Corsica, drawing inspiration from the diverse environments he encountered. In 1954, a visit to Venice led to a successful exhibition of his works, further establishing his reputation.
Lino was closely associated with the "Painters of Poetic Reality" group, alongside artists like Maurice Brianchon, Raymond Legueult, and Kostia Terechkovitch. His close friendship with Albert Marquet deeply influenced his work. Albert Camus also praised Lino's marine paintings, noting their success and vibrant freshness, despite their Marquet-like influence.
Lino’s style evolved throughout his life, transitioning from Expressionism to a more contemporary approach, with his "Compositions" marking a key moment in his later years. As a prominent figure of post-war Algerian painting, he was admired for his modernism and his ability to convey a lived Orientalism, capturing the essence of Algeria and its people.
In 1957, Lino exhibited at the Galerie de l'Institut in Paris, where his work was purchased by the City of Paris for their collection. He passed away in 1961, and in 1962, he was posthumously awarded the Grand Prix Artistique of Algeria.
