About the Item

A highly decorative and refined painting from the Danish Golden Age by Hans Jørgen Hammer, depicting a young woman in a wine cellar pouring red wine from a barrel into a large bottle. To the right, a cat sits on one of the barrels, curiously gazing down at the woman. Sunlight streams through the open doorway, illuminating the room, while in the distance, the campagna and mountains stretch towards the horizon. An opening in the roof reveals a glimpse of the blue sky. Provenance: The artist; his estate sale, 1882, lot 21a, "Et Vinlager." Hans Jørgen Hammer (1815-1882) was a Danish painter and printmaker associated with the Golden Age of Danish painting. Born in 1815, in Copenhagen, he demonstrated an early talent for drawing and began his artistic training under the court painter Jon Gulsen Berg before enrolling at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1828. He progressed through the Academy, studying under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, a key figure in Danish art, and received various awards, including the Small Silver Medal in 1842 and the Neuhausen Prize in 1847. Hammer was deeply influenced by art historian N.L. Høyen, who encouraged Danish artists to focus on national themes and depictions of everyday life. He followed this guidance by painting scenes of rural life, harvest celebrations, and everyday activities, which resonated with contemporary audiences. Additionally, he depicted national-historical subjects, particularly from the Three Years' War (1848-1851), aligning with the patriotic sentiments of the time. His cheerful rural scenes and idealized portrayals of country life brought him great popularity, though later critics often viewed such genre paintings as overly romanticized. Beyond genre painting, Hammer produced a number of portraits and numerous Danish and Italian landscapes. His Italian architectural scenes, in particular, reflect keen observations and an emphasis on the rhythmic patterns of walls and rooftops, a likely influence from Eckersberg's teachings in linear perspective. Unlike Eckersberg's strict architectural compositions, however, Hammer focused more on everyday structures and anonymous buildings. Hammer's artistic pursuits were interrupted by his military service during the Three Years' War, where he enlisted as a volunteer in 1848. With financial support from the Academy, he traveled to Italy between 1857 and 1859 and again from 1881 to 1882. He also ventured to North America between 1874 and 1875 and visited Skagen in 1875. His travels influenced his work significantly, with his Italian landscapes receiving particular acclaim. His painting, "A Square in Ariccia after Sunset", (1862) was well received and became part of the Royal Painting Collection. Hammer exhibited extensively, participating in exhibitions at the Danish Charlottenborg Spring Salon Exhibitions from 1838 to 1882, the Royal Academy in Stockholm in 1866, the Nordic Art Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1872, and the Paris World Exhibition in 1878. His works were also featured in several retrospectives, including "Danish Painters in Rome in the 19th Century" (Palazzo Braschi, Rome, 1977), "C.W. Eckersberg and His Students" (Statens Museum for Kunst, 1983), and "The Naked Golden Age" (Hirschsprung Collection, 1994). For his contributions to Danish art, Hammer was knighted in the Order of the Dannebrog in 1862 and became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1874. Hammer died in Rome in 1882, and was buried there. His works can be found in various Danish museums, including the National Gallery of Denmark and the Hirschsprung Collection. His work endures as a significant contributor to Danish National Romanticism and genre painting.
