The canvas size is 10 x 14 inches, framed size is 17.75 x 21.75 inches. Framed in a wooden gold frame, with fabric liner and gold fillet. It is in excellent condition. About the artist. Helen Rayburn Caswell, born March 16th, 1923, in Long Beach, California, passed away January 4th, 2018, at her home in Occidental, she was 94. Helen grew up in Eugene, Oregon, where she met her husband, Dwight Alan Caswell. After World War II, they settled in Saratoga in the Santa Clara Valley. Helen showed a talent for art at an early age, drawing cartoon characters on the back of her mother's bank book during church. In Saratoga, Helen began a very successful career as artist and children's portrait painter, displaying in galleries in Carmel, teaching workshops, and teaching at home. In addition to her work as a portrait artist, Helen wrote and illustrated over 30 books for children and adults. Her favorite subjects in art were children, gardens, and cats. In 1981, Helen and Dwight moved to Occidental in Sonoma County. There Helen designed the stained glass window for the Sebastopol United Methodist Church, participated in Art Trails and Art at the Source, painted murals at St. Ignatius Church in San Francisco and at the Elizabeth Seton Center in Menlo Park. Frederick Carl Frieseke was a member of the third generation of American painters to inhabit and find inspiration from Giverny, France. His use of bright colors and light, to depict the female figure, defined the style of the Giverny group during his residence, synthesizing aspects of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Born in the United States, Frieseke studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. In 1898, he moved to Paris to enroll in the Académie Julian, where he studied under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. During this time, Frieseke also briefly studied with James A. Whistler, who would prove to be a great inspiration in Frieseke’s early works. From Whistler, Frieseke adopted a tonalist palette and a decorative approach to figurative painting. Born in Philadelphia in 1875, Martha Walter attended Girls’ High School followed by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It was at the Academy that Walter’s artistic talent was discovered. An admiring instructor by the name of William Merritt Chase took young Martha under his wing, giving her both inspiration and direction. She additionally enrolled with Chase at his summer school in Shinnecock, Long Island and in 1903, was awarded the Cresson Traveling Scholarship by the Pennsylvania Academy. This sent Martha Walter on travels to France, Italy, Spain, and Holland, where she attended the Grand Chaumiere and the Academie Julian in Paris.
