Helen Steele
"Lost" Mixed Media Contemporary Figurative Abstract Expressionist

2010

About the Item

"Lost" by Helen Steele is a 48" x 36" mixed media canvas that resonates with the poignant solitude of contemporary figurative abstraction. Dark, brooding browns and deep shadows form the backdrop, against which a solitary, indistinct figure cloaked in golden and amber tones appears to be in a state of introspection or disconnection. This abstract expressionist work explores the theme of isolation, with the figure seemingly adrift in a vast and undefined space. The use of contrasting colors emphasizes a sense of dislocation and yearning, evoking the complex emotions associated with the search for direction and purpose. Helen Steele was born in Germany and has an extensive educational background, including a Master's Degree in Art Education, Art History, and Psychology from the Ludwigs Maximilian University in Munich and further studies in Italy. She moved to Los Angeles in 1987, where she began exhibiting her work, and has since held exhibitions across various states in the U.S. Her work as an art instructor and her diverse educational experiences have likely contributed to the depth and complexity found in her artworks. Original, 1-of-1. Available at the American Art Gallery, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. 'I'll Be Back,' by XVALA is a mixed media painting and colorful screen print with iridescent oil stick painting featuring the theme of the 'New World Order.' It was produced in 2015/16. The phrase 'I'll Be Back' is printed on the top and bottom margins of the work with the words 'New World Order' on the top margin. Three heads are stacked in the center of the canvas with the 'all seeing eye' on the top of the head. XVALA's art illuminates the hidden fallout spawned from our high tech Internet age. His 'Fear Google' campaign exposed the decay of privacy and 'No Delete' used hacked nude celebrity photos to highlight loss of control over personal information. The artist has worked with trash from the homes of Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and others, as well as dirt from the graves of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. The dirt appears in the New World Order collection as part of a pyramidal, 3D printed, living ant farm...

Heather Farrell Title : My Venus de Willendorf Materials : Mixed media on canvas Date : 2020 Dimensions : 4' x 4' Description : I was inspired by the ongoing racial inequalities and racism plaguing America. I have been interested in the history we are taught from a young age and what this history is geared toward accomplishing and for whom. I find it interesting who dictates what history is important and what can be commodified and taken for one group's benefit over another. The Venus is an important historical and artistic discovery and I use it as a symbol for the capturing of a culture, an idea or a virtue for one group's gain over another. I also use plastic Hawaiian lei as the capturing rope because lei have more recently been used as a very touristy, sometimes cheapened symbol for American excess and materialism. After all, the American government...
