Henri Deparade
Return of Odysseus

2019

About the Item

In his turbulent compositions, lines and colors overlap and condense into figuratively looking scenes. As a figurative informal painter or informal figure painter, he proves in a way the efficiency and capacity of the medium. He is interested in how much abstraction a realistic image can tolerate, and vice versa, and how few lines are enough to make a two-dimensional artefact appear plastic. The dialogical situation in which the protagonists face each other in Deparade’s pictures can be seen as a metaphor for the dialogue of styles and techniques. Under no circumstances, however, is there only peaceful coexistence. The fact that men and women often meet in an erotically charged situations does not happen by chance: there is not only an ongoing struggle between the sexes, but also between figure and their surroundings, between contour and surface in these pictures. It is not the equal coexistence that makes up the essence of Deparade’s art, rather the never smooth and painful change from one state to another. Everything in this painting is aimed at avoiding the static. Nothing seems to stand still, everything is in motion. The figures interpenetrate, merge with each other and with the painting surface to dissolve again and lead a life of their own. The work titles, which Deparade likes to borrow from Greek mythology, remind us of the often repressed dark sides of our Western culture. By providing a projection surface for collective as well as individually repressed obsessions, they serve to broaden the scope of interpretation. Author: Dr. Harald Tesan, Nuremberg 2010
