HENRY OSSAWA TANNER (American, 1859-1937) Daniel in the Lions' Den, after Briton Riviere Oil on Canvas 29-½ x 43 in. unframed 38 x 52-½ in. framed Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937) is credited for being the first African-American, award-winning artist in the prestigious Paris Salon in 1896 with international acclaim thereafter. Although there is still a long way to go in terms of representation for black American artists and other minorities in the art world, Tanner set the precedent. Tanner dealt with racial injustice throughout his life. In his early career, no artist accepted a black apprentice, and once he enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he was the only black student. In his autobiography The Story of an Artist's Life, Tanner describes the burden of racism: “I was extremely timid and to be made to feel that I was not wanted, although in a place where I had every right to be, even months afterwards caused me sometimes weeks of pain. Every time any one of these disagreeable incidents came into my mind, my heart sank, and I was anew tortured by the thought of what I had endured, almost as much as the incident itself.” Despite these racial hardships, Tanner saw success in his artistic career, especially once he moved to Paris and studied at the Académie Julian. A turning point in his career was when he submitted his version of Daniel in the Lions' Den to the 1896 Paris Salon and was awarded an honorable mention. This piece by Tanner, also titled "Daniel in the Lions' Den", is after an original by artist Briton Rivière. It is likely that this version of Daniel in the Lions' Den by Tanner planted the seed of inspiration for what would become his most important work. He was later appointed Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1923, which was considered the highest national order of merit by the French government. His art may be seen in prominent museums around the country, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and perhaps most notably, in the White House: the first painting by an African-American artist that was purchased for the permanent collection of the White House.
