About the Item
Signed lower left and dated 1984.
Presented here is a compelling work by the acclaimed Brazilian artist Jaimendes (b. 1939), titled "Pool Hall" (c. 1984), a vibrant and insightful exploration of social dynamics within a seemingly mundane setting. Jaimendes, celebrated for his mastery of figurative painting and keen observation of human interaction, brings a rich narrative to life on canvas.
Born in Criciúma, Brazil, Jaimendes’ artistic journey began early, culminating in studies in graphic design in Rio de Janeiro, a discipline that clearly influenced his precise compositions and striking visual storytelling. His work has been exhibited internationally, from the prestigious Galerias de Arte Borghese in Rio to international art fairs in Miami and London.
"Pool Hall" masterfully captures a specific moment in time and atmosphere. The scene, reminiscent of a classic pool hall, is rendered with Jaimendes' characteristic use of bold colors and distinctive character portrayal. The figures, meticulously placed within the composition, evoke a sense of individual narratives intertwining within a shared space of leisure and subtle tension. The interplay of light and shadow, particularly around the illuminated pool table and the figures in the foreground, draws the viewer's eye into the depth of the scene, highlighting the central characters and their interactions, such as the exchange of money that hints at a deeper narrative beneath the surface of the game.
This piece serves as a testament to Jaimendes' ability to transform everyday scenes into profound artistic statements, inviting contemplation on human connection, leisure, and the subtle complexities of social life. "Pool Hall" is a significant example of his enduring legacy in the realm of modern figurative art.

Jaimendes is a distinguished Brazilian Postwar & Contemporary painter, born on September 9, 1939, in Criciúma, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. His artistic inclinations were evident from a young age; he excelled in drawing and painting at the São Leopoldo Boarding School, where he received numerous awards in these categories. He pursued higher education in Rio de Janeiro, where he completed his college studies in graphic design, a field in which he demonstrated remarkable talent and success, working for various advertising firms in both Rio and São Paulo. Jaimendes' art is primarily characterized by his figurative paintings, which often depict scenes of Brazilian daily life and social interactions, as exemplified in works like "Pool Hall" and "Grinding Sugar Cane". His vibrant color palette and detailed representations are hallmarks of his style. His works have been offered at auction multiple times, with notable sales including "Jazz Musicians" and "The Matador". Beyond his presence in the auction market, Jaimendes has participated in numerous exhibitions throughout his career. His exhibition history includes shows at prestigious venues such as Galerias de Arte Borghese in Rio de Janeiro, as well as international showings at Hotel Intercontinental in Miami and Hotel Carlton in Cannes, and participation in international art festivals in Spain, Cannes, and Milan.
