About the Item

James Brade Sword Mending the Nets at Sunset Signed lower left Oil on canvas 12 x 20 inches James Brade Sword was born in Philadelphia, but from around 1840 until 1849, he resided in Macao with his family while his father worked in the tea and silk trade in Canton, China. The family later returned to Philadelphia, where Sword attended public schooling and pursued a career in civil engineering. He transitioned to being a professional artist in 1862 but left this profession in 1864 to start producing silverplated goods. By the fall of 1871, he had returned to art, opening a studio in New York. He traveled across the nation for sketching trips, visiting places such as the Green Mountains in Vermont, the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania, Bar Harbor in Maine, and Lake George in New York, where he connected with artist Asher B. Durand (1796-1886). The two collaborated in painting, and Sword gained significant insights into landscape painting from Durand. In 1881, Sword traveled to Conanicut Island, Rhode Island, where he found inspiration in the scenery. He constructed a house there in 1883 and spent his summers painting along the island's shores. Sword was deeply involved in the Philadelphia art scene, presenting work at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1876 to 1906, showcasing at the Centennial Exhibition in 1876, helping establish the Art Club of Philadelphia, and serving as president of both the Philadelphia Society of Artists and the Artists' Fund Society. Additionally, he exhibited at the World’s Industrial Cotton Centennial Exposition in New Orleans in 1883, at the American Art Association and National Academy of Design in New York from 1876 to 1892, the Brooklyn Art Association from 1873 to 1884, and the Art Institute of Chicago from 1895 to 1908.
