About

Two images, one of a woman's face and the other, a strongman lifting an old-fashioned barbell are interlaced in this painting by James Paulsen. Ribbons of each image alternate in thin undulating bands with the woman's eyes lining up with the two ends of the man's barbell. Spectacles is one of James Paulsen's subtlest paintings with quiet grays, browns and flesh tone accented by the woman's red lips. It is a small painting on stretched canvas measuring 18 x 14 x 1.25 inches. It is notable that after Paulsen composes how two images will be combined he paints them simultaneously, not one over the other.

James Paulsen is known for his optically dynamic and conceptually engaging paintings. Paulsen couches editorial commentary in nostalgic affect by interlacing imagery from a variety of sources. He playfully embraces paradox in a state of tension. One thing must be seen in terms of the other.
