Conservation state:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean, and the paint is clear and uniform. An inspection under ultraviolet reveals some restoration work consisting of fine lines sensitively executed through the flesh tones of the figures, the Virgin's robes, the sky, parts of the architecture, and in the white tablecloth at lower left. The painting looks good and there is no need for further intervention.
The painting is embellished with a beautiful intact early 16th-century gilt frame.
Details:
The Madonna presented here is a replica of the Madonna and Child exhibited at the "Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België," made in the mid-16th century by the workshop of Jan Massys.
Galassi's studies show that Jan Massys's workshop had produced not only works on panel, but also paintings on canvas (like ours) more suitable for export.
The painting was probably commissioned by a family from Genoa who had had the opportunity to see the Madonna and Child exhibited today in the Koninklijke Musea and who were in Genoa at the time staying with a member of the Pallavicino family.

The book in which the work is published will also be handed over.
