The present painting may have been inspired by a place the artist saw/visited growing up in Indonesia. A painter of genre, landscapes and coastal scenes in oils and watercolor, Tromp was also a lithographer. He enrolled at the Academy in The Hague in 1893 studying under Frederick Johannes Jansen (1856-1922) who stylistically, was to have a profound influence on Tromp's work. In 1893-95 Tromp studied at the Academy in Amsterdam under the director Augustus Allebé (1838-1927). Working in the style of the Hague School, Tromp was to have immediate success. His subject matter, scenes of rural life featuring children, animals and the Dutch landscape were of great appeal. Tromp exhibited widely and traveled throughout Holland. He exhibited in The Hague in 1893, Arnhem in 1897 and 1900, Amsterdam in 1899, Groeningen and Rotterdam in 1902 and Leeuwarden in 1903. Tromp was widely collected in the Netherlands, Britain and the United States. His "With Grandfather" being sold from a New York collection as early as 1911 for $425.
