About the Item

As a painter, I am interested in investigating contemporary relationships to the natural world, specifically within (so-called) wilderness settings. As a life-long city dweller, I understand all two well the lure of wild spaces: the sense of escape and respite from the rigors and structures of daily life, the meditative power of working with one’s hands to fulfill the needs we normally take for granted, and the sense of camaraderie fostered around the light of a blazing fire. Outdoors, amongst the flora and fauna that buzz and bristle within complex and mysterious worlds of their own, there is a sense of timelessness, of deep and layered history. Yet present-day interactions with the land can be complex, confusing, and deeply entangled within larger colonial and capitalistic constructs. Following World War two, outdoor recreational activities such as camping and hiking, gained widespread popularity in North America, as middle-class families experienced increased leisure time and access to personal vehicles. In the decades to follow, widespread networks of private and public parks and campgrounds emerged throughout North America, capitalizing on the population’s growing interest in outdoor experiences. Today, many settler Canadians have developed a suburban relationship to the “wild”, having come to expect a wide range of services and infrastructure to support their desire to engage with the outdoors while maintaining the comforts of home. Much of my current work is an attempt to navigate and understand the tensions that exist between how outdoor experiences can bring us a sense of joy and the contrasting economic constructs that shape our understanding of “the wilderness”. My fictional, often humorous, compositions challenge and deconstruct the ritualistic ways that we engage with the natural world, as well as the systems of commercialism and control that guide our outdoor experiences. My current research also considers the fact that engaging with the outdoors out of leisure requires consumer participants to be in a position of relative privilege: Access to a personal vehicle and discretionary time and income are necessary to enjoy the outdoors in this way. My works grapple with the irony inherent to this reality: A privileged demographic contributing to a multi-billion-dollar outdoor recreation industry in order to participate in activities that some people do out of necessity – such as sleeping in tents, living out of a backpack, or picking fruit as a low paying labor job. My hope, in creating and sharing these paintings, is to engage audiences in a conversation about what it means to experience the natural world in the 21st century, and to consider the implications therein of artificiality, capitalism and colonialism.
