About the Item
Oil painting on masonite by the french Art Deco and modernist painter Jean Burkhalter. This artist is well-known to be one of the founders of the UAM ("Union des Artistes Modernes" i.e. Union of Modern Artists) with Pierre Chareau, Sonia Delaunay, Jean Fouquet, Eileen Gray, Hélène Henry, Francis Jourdain, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Gustave Miklos, Jean-Charles Moreux, Jean Prouvé, Jean Puiforcat, Gérard Sandoz and Raymond Templier. Some of his paintings were in the best collections, like that of Robert Mallet Stevens ("Paysage de montagne" and "Vue de village", Christie's sale 1000, Les Collections du Château de Gourdon, Paris, France, 29 - 31 March 2011).
This modern, large and expressive painting depicts a party in a nightclub. People are having fun and dancing around a light which is like a sun. It ca be noticed that dance is a major theme in the work of Burkhalter. Besides, this painting full of movements and vivid pop colors is reminiscent of the art of German and American Figurative Expressionism, especially that of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Emile Nolde.
