Jean Duplessis-Bertaux trained as an engraver in the atelier of Jacques-Philippe Le Bas, after studying drawing with painter Joseph-Marie Vien, master of Jacques-Louis David. The artist mastered an academic technique, rich in chiaroscuro and emphasizing even small figures, typical of 18th-century engraving. His extensive output is often employed in large-scale publishing ventures-in which numerous artists, including draughtsmen and engravers, including Pierre-Gabriel Berthault, participated-with full-page plates and cartoons. These include Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non's Voyage pittoresque à Naples et en Sicile, Précis historique de la Révolution française, La Galerie de Palais-Royal, and Tableaux, statues, bas-reliefs et camées de la Galerie de Florence et du palais Pitti (1789-1807). Although he is known primarily for his engraving production and his work as a burinist, Jean Duplessis-Bertaux also produced numerous battle scenes, often depicting the crucial events of Napoleon's campaigns, such as the Conquest of the Tuileries Palace on August 10, 1792, a painting currently on display at the sumptuous Versailles Battle Gallery.
In this beautiful pair of paintings the French artist depicts events that took place during the Battle of Oudenaarde, during the War of the Spanish Succession, fought on July 11, 1708, in East Flanders. In the first painting, English troops under the Duke of Marlborough face the French, marked by the distinctive blue banner. In the second painting, the dynamic figures of French soldiers, opposed by the Imperial Hussars, commanded by Prince Eugene of Savoy, stand out. Victory in the historic clash fell to the Anglo-Imperials.
The setting of the two battles, with the backdrop of horsemen in the foreground, is peculiar to French war genre painting in the second half of the 18th century, as is the jagged horizon line and the wide sky furrowed by clouds and clots of smoke given off by artillery, blurring the outline of mountains and forts. The figures, rendered with quick and flamboyant touches of color, are distinguished by their dynamism and expressive force.
