Original Mid Century San Francisco Oil Abstract Expressionist Painting of Coffee House Musician by Jean Hyson
Vivid abstract expressionist painting by Jean Hyson (American, 1928 - 2023), circa 1964. A couple sits in a coffee house enjoying a musician playing a string instrument. The unique overhead perspective and vivid orange colors punctuated with black and sharp angles add depth and interest contributing to an overall balanced and pleasing composition.

Jean Hyson was born in Alvarado, Texas March 4, 1934. She studied at the Art Student League of New York four years; NYU MFA, Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris for two years. She studied painting with William Baziotes, drawing with George Cross, and graphics with Harry Sternberg. She moved to San Francisco in 1961. She is best known for modernist paintings and hard edge abstractions.
Jean Hyson and her ex-husband Jacques Fabert (who typically painted under the name “Jean Faber Limbert”) were an important force within the midcentury San Francisco art scene. Her work has been featured in many solo and group gallery and museum exhibits in the Bay Area gallery and museum exhibitions from 1957 to 1993—including SFMOMA, the de Young, and the Legion of Honor. Her work is in numerous museums, public and private collections. She died in San Francisco in 2023
