Jean Paul
A Rare View of a Match, Pelote Basque, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Euskal Pilota

About the Item

Watercolour and gouache painting of a game of Pelotes by Jean Paul. The painting is signed and located bottom right. Presented in a fine varnished and ebonised wood frame under glass. A rare painting of pelotes players in the middle of a match. They are in their iconic white outfits with hats and carrying their wicker throwers. They are playing against the traditional shaped wall with an animated crowd all around them watching on. The artist has chosen an unusual colour palette of pinks and greens with highlights of white to really make the figures of the players stand out. Basque pelota (Basque: Euskal pilota) is a collection of ball games from the jeu de paume. In most specialties, the game consists of sending the ball on a volley or after a bounce on a main wall, called a pediment, so that it falls on the playing area called the cancha. The point continues until one team commits a foul (falta) or fails to re-roll the ball before the second bounce. Pelota is a universal game, a legacy of other civilisations, which the Basques have adapted and transformed with their own characteristics. Already evoked in mythology or on funerary stelae, practiced for centuries in playgrounds located in the mountains, Basque pelota was inspired in the seventeenth century by the tennis court to make many modifications and create new and numerous specialties. Face to face or against a wall, indoors or outdoors, with bare hands or using various instruments, with the introduction of rubber in the manufacture of balls, the innovations gradually brought out the particularities and rules of current Basque pelota.
