"Le Verdon depuis le Belvédère de Rancoumas" – Provence, France
“The Verdon from the Belvedere of Rancoumas” - Provence, France
Oil on canvas signed lower right, 81 x 100 x 2,5 cm, titled and dated on the back, 1995.
Framed with a natural oak floating frame (86 x 105 x 3,5 cm frame included)
This oil painting offers a view of the Gorges du Verdon from the belvedere at Rancoumas, Provence. With its large dimensions (81 x 100 cm), the work captures the grandeur of the landscape, focusing on the imposing cliffs and deep canyon below.
The cliffs, in bluish-white and pinkish-beige tones, are represented by dynamic, textured brushstrokes, emphasizing the erosion of the rock formations. Blue and turquoise accents deepen the shadows, emphasizing the depth and verticality of the canyon.
The limited but masterful color palette creates striking contrasts between light and shadow. Light seems to come from above, illuminating some areas and leaving others in shadow. Small touches of green in the sparse vegetation add texture, while the soft background and clear sky reinforce the tranquil atmosphere.
JEAN THOMAS (1923-2019)
Trained at the Lyon Academy of Fine Arts, Jean Thomas began exhibiting his work in 1946. His early paintings, influenced by Modernist masters like Fernand Léger and Henri Matisse, also show the impact of contemporaries such as Bernard Buffet. In his landscapes paintings, Jean Thomas explores light with great precision, achieving near-photographic realism while maintaining a distinct artistic style.
Known for his exceptional technical skills, Jean Thomas’s paintings remain in impeccable condition, demonstrating meticulous preparation and execution. He seamlessly blended painting and craftsmanship, creating works of fine detail.
Thomas had a rare ability to capture the essence of places, mainly from France but also from New York and Venice to Tahiti and Corsica. His masterful use of light made his paintings deeply immersive.
Jean Thomas, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 96, left a lasting legacy in major institutions like the Centre Pompidou and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris. Throughout his career, his introspective approach allowed him to express what moved him, from portraits to Mediterranean landscapes. His work reflects his deep connection to regions like Provence, Italy, Spain, Tunisia, Sicily, and Corsica, which he saw as endless sources of beauty and inspiration.

Trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, Jean Thomas began exhibiting early works in 1946, in the wake of the great modern painters. “The influences of Fernand Léger and Henri Matisse can be heard in his early canvases, which often feature muted brown-gray tones, as well as echoes of the research of contemporaries such as Bernard Buffet, notably in his series on religious art. From 1955 onwards, Jean Thomas turned his attention to landscapes, which he now depicted with a highly personal style, delivering representations of near-photographic precision. Through a precise study of light and great pictorial mastery, his works bear witness to a trend: post-war realist landscapes. While Paris and the surrounding region provided him with an inexhaustible playground, Jean Thomas thrived on travel - throughout France and the world, from the United States to Polynesia. He kept a notebook in which each painting was listed and located. He ventured to the four corners of the globe. We can follow his peregrinations in Corsica, Normandy, Auvergne, Polynesia and New York. As a professional painter, Jean Thomas has exhibited extensively in Paris (Galerie d'art de la Place Beauvau, Galerie de la Tournelle), throughout France and abroad, from Tokyo to Florence and Brussels.
